Trimmed the 25 ft Fig

It took some guts. It is done. The 15 ft Fig has been pruned. I don't think it was 25ft, but it sure was tall.  I left a couple of branches with last years growth to see what produces better. A test of sorts. My backyard littered with fig tree guts. Big sigh.. It was nice to see that it got so big, but I couldn't reach half the fruit. If you like I'll send you some cuttings, I'd like to try and root a different type. There is a smaller, sleeper in the back of this tree that has never had a single fruit. On the big one I could harvest half a pitcher of fruit every other day, even not being able to reach the top. I don't know what type it is. Came from the local family owned garden shop as a birthday present. I've never ever sprayed it or fertilized it. Just Carolina blue skies and good rains.

I'd be happy to come over and help you trim the (ripe) fruit off;)

Good looking tree

Very nice tree, looks like from the fruit it might be a Celeste, just a guess

Very very nice looking tree. It really seems happy where it is.

Poor thing is forever competing with the beech tree for sunlight.

Classic Celeste, great tree!!

But it's a Celeste that doesn't drop its fruit.  A real winner!

Come on down in July when it's time to pick! It's like standing in a shady tent. Ok a very hot, humid, shady tent...

Beautiful tree!

Lizzie, very nice tree there, any idea how old it is?

It's about 15 years old. In the past I've only trimmed a few branches so I could get around it with the lawnmower. My mom's friend had a fig tree when I was a child. I love the way it looked, but finally it made no sense to not be able to reach the fruit. It's now trimmed to 5 feet. Wondering of going to 4 feet in height and diameter. I found some branches that are beginning to root into the ground. The main roots are as thick as an elephant trunk, and branches as thick as an arm. It should get plenty of sun into the center of it now.

My unknown Celeste is coming back finally, up to about 3 feet off the ground new growth sprouting out of the main arms and the elephant trunks in the ground. Above 3 feet she is all brown dry branches. They break right off. Bone dry inside too.
It's in the high 80'ties during the day and had been pretty hot. I deep watered her around the root perimeter for about two hours and she started taking off after that.
I didn't think she needed moisture since we had so much rain in the spring even two weeks ago. I don't usually water her at all, unless we have the ground cracking.
I'm just letting her grow for now avoiding all stress. I will maybe trim her back one branch at a time, once she has her mature leaves on. Never did get any borers in NC lucky duck, will seal and paint her as soon as the leaves fall.
