Triple Crown Blackberries

I received a rooted plant in good condition and a bunch of cuttings. Thank you Blue for your generosity. Now I have to jump start the aeroponic project while the rooted plant is comfortably growing in my mini greenhouse.

A happy TC plant!

It looks like it found a happy home, Andrew...

Well. First experience rooting blackberries and I can see why they're considered so tenacious. These cuttings really want to grow! The speed and ease with which these cuttings root is amazing compared to figs and grapes. This is one after maybe a week in a treepot. I'd noticed a huge ring of callus on the top end, and wanted to make sure I hadn't rooted it upside down so carefully pulled it out to see. It was heavily callused on both ends, and roots. Other cuttings have roots all over, even the ends outside of the soil.

Thanks again, Blue!

Hi All,  I have the same observations as Sarah, Giant Callus (not sure of term) on cut end and roots sprouting at the top of the cutting.  Absolutely nothing happening on the bottom end I dunked in rooting hormone.  How should this be planted?  completely buried?  Sideways?  The already rooted cutting I received is quickly becoming a bush.  Thanks X2 to Blue.

I'm glad that you are enjoying such success with the Triple Crown, Andrew and Sarah.

Andrew, apparently that cane is telling you how it really wants to grow.  They readily tip-root, and that is what it is attempting.

If you place these cuttings sideways in a growing medium, you will have roots at every bud.  One might call them the Easy Date  of the plant world... readily giving up their roots at every opportunity!   LOL!!

Hi Blue, you wouldn't by any chance have a few more berry cuttings would you? I just am getting into berries. Thanks!

Certainly,  anything for a fellow Scouter.

I have to agree with Marionberry being a lot better tasting than anything else with the possible exception of Triple Crown.

Dan, if your berries are seedy and sour then your soil needs attention.  It needs more water as the berries form and I would add more organic material, micronutrients and fertilizer to start with.  :)  I'd also look at the pH.

Has anyone tasted Prime Ark Traveler?  Nourse rates that berry flavor as good, while it rates PA Freedom as excellent.

Wow, amazing to see how nice your cuttings have taken, Sarah.  I haven't grown any berries from cuttings either but really looking forward to having these little plants sprout!

Blue, thanks for sharing these with us!

Thanks, Meg! Well, they're doing it all on their own. I'd put a few in each pot to increase the chances of having a viable plant, but looks like each cutting could yield a plant from every node if they'd been divided.

It's inspired me to try it with some of the raspberries I have. If raspberry cuttings root as well, would be a great way to increase the baba berry patch. :)

   You're more than welcome, Meg.

Sarah, I tried to find raspberries for you at the Sac scion exchange, but the Triple Crown that I brought were the only cane berry at the event.

   Blue

Thanks, Blue, I really appreciate that! I should have plenty more after expanding using the raspberry canes I already have to prune off my own plants though. Let me know if you want a few baba berry cuttings and don't have them already. It's a delicious berry!

The TC cuttings are beginning to show life using the cloner. They are the ones on the right against the wall.

Thanks again, Blue.

  Looking great guys!

Be careful though...  these things can snowball just as the figs have.   I started out with a few cuttings from another grower 18 years ago, and I now have about a 1/3 acre of them.

Thanks, Blue. I'll keep that in mind. :)

A post here says PAF patent applied for, no cuttings allowed.

This has been released and is carried by Territorial Seed Company. I have never ordered from here. The seeds are expensive and I would not pay $8 shipping for a pack or two of seeds. It is probably also carried by Berries Unlimited. I have Lochness from Berries. It was mostly rootstock and grew well, very sweet, no bitterness and minimal seeds, top rated berry. I also found Apache which is also highly rated at a local Big Y. Couldn't believe I found it there, it was my second choice from Berries. Went out a couple days ago and snagged clippings from myself. Here we go again.

Interesting thing...I put some Arapaho cuttings in bags of soil ("baggie method").  The only ones to root as of yet (2 weeks),  were accidently placed in upside down.  Its not a tip cutting but maybe the orientation fooled the cutting?

I have never grown brambles from cuttings, interesting. I threw out maybe 8 tip rooted plants this fall. They want to spread everywhere.
I always have liked unusual plants and I have 2 different white blackberry cultivars, and a yellow black raspberry. The whites though are known to be virus carriers and so I really don't trade any of my brambles out. I don't want to infect your garden.
For blackberries I have
Lochness
Columbia Star
Burbanks White
Nettleton's Creamy White
Triple Crown
Anastasia wyeberry
Boysenberry
Tayberry
Navaho
Chester
Black Diamond
Natchez
Siskiyou
New Berry
Marionberry
And a couple others I recently obtained, i forget what they are?

And out of these Marion is by far better. I think it is a lot better than Triple Crown myself. I also like tayberry a lot, it tastes more like a raspberry, it is tart, but the jam is so awesome. I also like New Berry a lot and Boysen and wyeberry both raspberry-blackberry hybrids. Natchez produces extremely large berries, but flavor is just ok not great.
Here are some Natchez with Chandler blueberries from my garden.

Typical harvests for me are rather large. i have gallon bags and bags of berries still in the freezer.
These are mostly black, red, yellow and orange raspberries with a few blackberries and a few strawberries.

Nice going , Drew. I've heard others say good things about Marionberry It's one I may try.

Thanks, I could offer cuttings but as i said I'm worried about possible virus infection in my yard.

Blue-I would like to get some of the cuttings if still available - sent you an IM- thanks.

Blue all of the cuttings are growing well. I am thrilled that I have them. They rooted in dirt and they rooted in my Botanicare. I could not be happier or more elated. Now if I could just fine  some one to gift me a peach tree,or provide information on growing them in pots. Larry
