Trouble with RootRiot cubes

I cut three Noire De Barbentane and two Jolly Tiger air layers that were started with the root riot cubes yesterday and potted up with Fertilome UPM yesterday.

We will see in about a week if this was a success for fail.

Wish me luck

Did you happen to get pictures? You know how we love them.
I'm going to bet they are perfect. I believe this because with an air layer I think there are more roots and bigger roots than doing it from scion.

Tami,

I know exactly how much you love the root riot;)

I did not take pictures this time. Sorry
But in several I cut the cubes into a few little pieces and stuffed them in the bags or cups, did both ways.

I am trying my first 2 attempts at air layering. I am airlayering my pencil VdB and trying my bottlebrush trees. I am using root riot on both attempts so if it fails you can be sure it had to be the cubes, couldn't possibly be the operator. haha

Try one with moist soil. One that you will be using for potting.

You should be fine.

Wish you would have told me that 2 weeks ago :/ they're already underway. I'll try that though when I get back I have more to do. Thanks Rafed.

Tami,

As time goes by you will learn more and more. There are many methods to use and each and everyone of them works for one while not for another. As in this subject thread proves it to be as such.

Soon you will find what works for you, just have to stick to it. But leave yourself open to new methods too.

Rafed, when did you start the air layers? Just curious about the time frame with
your RR . I started some about 4 1/2 weeks ago I need to check on.

Mike,

I started them on July 14th.
I sent an email that same day to a fig friend to tell him I started them and one ( NDB ) would be for him.
They all had a good amount of roots.

But stay tuned for the big air layer I will post next week. This thing is bigger than a football.

OK Rafed,

I looked for an hour. WHERE did you hide that camera at my house?

AND what about me? Am I doomed to confusion or will the light eventually come on?

Charles,

Here's what I did,
When I started my cuttings in the RR cubes I potted them up as soon as they broke bud or when they had a fair amount of roots.

I still placed them after they were potted in deep containers and misted them everyday while under the lights. Then slowly I moved them out into the open.

They weren't watered much but I did spray them everyday and sometimes twice a day. Just don't let the cubes dry off completely. Those that failed were mostly due to fungus gnats.

I would suggest you try them with the more common cultivars as a learning tool till you get the hang of it.
This would be the perfect time to try this so by the next rooting/growing season you would have packed down and ready to move up with the more rare ones.

But believe it or not, there are others that took this method and produced much better than I did.

Confidence can be your best friend. You will be fine.

Rafed...that was a great "Vinny" clip...I'm still laughing.
