trying something else (graft)

I am shifting the rocks of my garden to lower the bed about a foot (it was way too high) and the process, I found all these amazing roots from my tree. Sparked an idea!  Will graft my new cuttings on these in place.

So, I just moved the root up to the ground level I wanted, run inside, got a piece of my  Panache of the same thickness (1/2" diameter) and grafted it onto the root, while still had most of it in the ground, wraped and secure it with a clip, move good dirt around, mulched with lots of fresh wood chips to add warm and cover with a bottle and more chips and top it of with another 5gallon plastic bucket I have with no bottom...should be warm in there... (forgot to take the picture of the process, so I did another one with a cutting of Green Ishia.

When I cut the root, there was a lot of latex, so, the cutting will be getting that food from them and should help heal the graft.  Now, crossing fingers... if all work well, next fall, I will dig them up and put them in pots.

Here they are.

Good luck, hope it's not too cold for grafting there!

Grasa...there's probably a lot of juice flowing through those old roots...should be interesting to see the effect this has on the new cuttings...as usual, you have come up with another unique idea...please keep us posted, and good luck.

Grasa,

Very interesting!  I am curious on the outcome of your graft.

I am planing to do a similar exercise a bit later (May) on rather thick roots of an old and vigorous tree.

Tell please what sort of cut you have used for the joint.

Good luck

I tried my grafting tool, but it was too fat for the cut, tried the slant cut and it kept sliding off, so I re-trimmed and settled with whip p-ad-tongue method - it gives the most contact and I used a paper clip to continue holding it tight and in place, if it does not slide off, I think it will OK, only time will tell.

The morning sun is shining on the buckets now, i think I will put a plastic on the soil to warm it up more.  Unusual weather in Seattle. Did you know we have a blue sky?  I had forgotten it was blue!

Great idea  Good luck with it!
