This is when they thawed   ... they taste really good :)20140505_145004.jpg

I am so excited about this find because a lot of fellow forum friends , especially newbies, don't even know what a fresh fig tastes like yet they are growing them out of curiosity...
Now they'll have the chance of trying, just to get a veg idea what a fresh fig might taste like and even BETTER when fresh off of our own trees.

Are those Calimyrna? Tjs is often stocked w local products, if they have it in NY I'll be psyched!

Just tried them myself yesterday.  Smyrna figs... they have a very strong honey taste.  I ate a couple frozen- that was really good on a hot day!

I bet the seeds are still viable and you can germinate them.
I germinated quite a few wild strawberries after they have been frozen for months from the seeds.
Well, the figs might be different but it is worth a try. The dried figs I buy from an Armenian store grow well.

D'Oh!! I passed by a Trader Joe's 12 hours ago.  Your email is 7 hours too late!!!!
But seriously, this is good info to know...
Jim

I saw this and called my TJs.  A lot of things TJs has in CA they can't get here.  They had them so I ran out and got them.  Haven't tried one yet.

The manager of my T.J said, it's in their customer satisfaction policy to take orders for a product that has been listed as T.J product.
so, tell them you saw the Figs listed in T.J website but they don't carry it and you need to order please!  :)
Don't forget the please, please.

Ok, I bought a bag of those, they look like yours, Aaron. They taste ok but I would choose the dried figs. These are too sweet for me, no acidity, no texture, nothing to chew, like bags of honey. The TJ dried Black Mission is a better money spent. But that is a my verdict only. Good find, though!

was thinking the same.. they should germinate...

igor,

what is the list of ingredients? any additives? when things get frozen, the taste seems to change a little. or the fig they are using doesn't have much complexity.

Pete,
In the list of the ingredients it only says 'figs', and below: origin of Turkey.
No additives, it seems.

I cannot imagine the taste is the same as the fresh figs, I couldn't taste much complexity, just honey sweet, very sweet. Also, the taste could be different if the figs were harder. After the ice melted, they became basically the little bags of jelly.
I am not bashing the figs, some people like this taste, just not me, sorry.

i'll have to go get some, but i'm with you. just sweet doesn't cut it. it has to have some certain something.

...it's better then not having any...:)
But it's true, nothing like fresh.

I found this article about them on the Trader Joe's website:

I tried one.  Mine wasn't even sweet.  Just bland and perhaps a little freezer burn.  It's the light fig that makes you understand why Martin only likes dark ones.  I'll try more later.  Hopefully they'll be better.  I'm glad I bought them so it will encourage TJs to carry more things fig.  TJ's dried Missions are not my cup of tea.  If they have large, soft Conadrias those were decent.  The smaller and drier the figs are, the less flavor they have.  So far the Sprouts dried Turkish figs have been the best preserved figs I've tasted.

What would be the best use for a frozen fig? Making jam? Baking? I've heard of thawing them out in a glass of white wine... :)

Arne

Alan, which variety are you talking about? because my dear neighbor is looking for a type that is whit and honey inside...I was thinking to give her Peter's Honey.
What did you have in mind?

I'm not looking for cuttings. I'm sure there are plenty whites with honey inside varieties in my collection somewhere... I just need to explore.
I don't want to disappoint her.

Arne, frozen figs are great for Sorbet... do you have one of those super fast blenders they are Show Roading in Costcos?

Yes Alen. I have them all in many copies ;)
Edit: I don't have any Numbered fig varieties...except the Italian xxx-15 or something, I really wanted that and a generous member sent me it.
