Good day, here is a picture of California Brown Turkey.  I was totally surprised by the flavor and taste of these figs!!!!!   Definiately in my top 5 for best tasting fig!  Now I know why so many people down south want Brown Turkey figs.  I added this one to my list request for cuttings.

Cecil, I take back all the bad things I said about CA Brown Turkey figs.  A man will perish with a LACK of knowledge!  And the funny thing is....the Brown Turkey at UCD was also excellent!  But again, all these figs at UCD have been caprified.  Plus Davis has the perfect climate for figs and so does other areas like Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico.

I'm researching how to get the fig wasp in my area.  I would like to see my figs caprified and compare them to seasons passed.  It won't do any good to compare them to Davis because their climate is different than mine.  According to people I interviewed at Davis, they said their weather drops down to 25 degrees every winter.  My climate is the same as Davis now according to the USDA, zone 8a.  So, the wasp should be able to thrive here. 

Ask SVanessa.  She has a source.  The fig orchards in the fresno area sell caprified male figs - individual figs.  You'll have to get male trees as cuttings from UCD.  There was some suspicion that there are different wasps for different trees.  I don't know what the outcome of that was.  Maybe you'll have to take potted plants with figs (male and female) to California and leave them there in someone's orchard from early may to july, then take them back with you and plant them in the ground.

Giuseppe,  I have to admit.  Now I see why folks ask for it by name.  They are excellent!  But I wonder something....

Is the Monrovia Brown Turkey the same as the California Brown Turkey?  And is the California Brown Turkey the same as the Improved Brown Turkey?  There is a local nursery that just got a few MBTs in.  the price is steep but I'm a sucker for a fig tree.  Fifty-five bucks for a 5 gallon MBT is steep but if I want to know the truth, I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get one or 2.  The morning, I plan on calling Monrovia and talk to them.  I bought 2 other BTs for 2 different sources.  I plan on testing them too.

UC Davis has both Brown Turkey and Callie Brown Turkey growing side by side.  Both were excellent but the Callie BT was richer and larger.  One day I will post my findings on these.

Last year, one of my biggest producer of figs was Improved Brown Turkey.  And yes, the figs were good.  Last year, my California Brown put on some nice size.  So, this year will be the comparison test between these:

Improved Brown Turkey
California Brown Turkey
Vern's Brown Turkey
Tilsbury's Brown Turkey
Black Jack
Black Spanish (OGW)


I also have 5 Texas Everbearing figs from 5 different sources.  It's going to be interesting to see if all of these are the same.

Last year was not a good year for figs in my climate.  However, this year is!  Currently the only figs that have ripen in my area are Black Jack.  My Black Spanish has not ripen yet.  But 3 of my Black Jacks ripen last week and i have another crop on the tree trying to ripen.

Southeastern Brown Turkey --  not ripe yet
Improved Brown Turkey --  appears to be the same as California Brown Turkey as other has said--but a super performer and great tasting fig.
California Brown Turkey -- same as Improved Brown Turkey
Vern's Brown Turkey -- Excellent tasting fig-- brownish red color with a amber center-- ripens a little late but worth it
Tilsbury's Brown Turkey -- Excellent tasting fig looks like Violet de Bordeaux but smaller figs

The bottom line is all of these figs are keepers.  I really like Improved Brown Turkey.  All of these trees are growing in pots.

Hey sdpops, that post you're referring is the one I started too. I'm glad to hear from another member who like IBT like me. I just rooted 2 large IBT cuttings that I will be keeping. The tree just keeps on putting out figs year after year.

Dennis, they doo look like the figs on Baker street!! Well there ya go!! You have convinced me that a caprifig makes a huge difference. It really changes a fig!

This fig is one reason most people fall in love with the taste of fresh figs!  This fig is the California Brown Turkey.  And no, it's not the same as Brown Turkey, its better!  These figs have been caprified by the wasp just like all figs are in California.  When ripe, they turn dark purple, almost black!  They taste absolutely amazing!  One of the best tasting figs!  Hoping one day to have the wasp in Charlotte!

Fig wasps don't get delivered they are everywhere here. There are only a few Calimyrna farmers left here in the Valley. In June they will hang brown sacks with profichi to pollinate the figs. And yes BT is great here if they aren't soured and filled with ants. They explode easily too from over caprification which happens easily because there are male wild figs all over, literally

I would guess here in Stevenson Ranch they aren't all over, just because I have yet to spot a wild fig. Perhaps more towards Simi Valley they have wild ones. This was one the worst hit locations during the severe drought so perhaps the wild figs died? I don't want to change the topic, but does anyone know of wild figs in the Santa Clarita Valley or San Fernando Valley?

There is a caprifig in someones backyard that I know of near Burbank blvd. & Van Nuys blvd. in Sherman Oaks in the San Fernando Valley. They are all over the place in Southern California.
I have a seedling that I dug up in my backyard and put in a large pot. It has had wasps in the figs for the last two years.
