UC Davis Cutting delivery STARTED !!! wohoooooo.

USDA/UCD cuttings are really fresh. no idea how they do this. fulfilling hundreds of requests and they are all so fresh.

Still no shipping info for my order.  Trying to be patient, but this seems like the latest shipping date ever for me.

Agree, latest ever. The persimmon and Mulberry likely a waste if not received soon, maybe already as my window to graft is passing by.

I got mine yesterday.  Got Panache and Ischia White.  Did not get Black Madeira and Ischia Black... (I really wanted the Ischia Black).

The cuttings look nice.  quite long.  I'll be able to make 2 or 3 cuttings from each.

I agree about the mulberry. As is, my strike ratio for rooting cuttings is bout 1 in 75. I've read some negative things about rooting kiwi fruit as well. I think I will have to buy some plants. The figs and pomegranates should be good to go, though.

James, what type of mulberry do you have trouble rooting?  Morus nigra are hard but Morus alba are very easy.  Morus nigra seems to graft onto Morus alba okay but will eventually outgrow it.  Maybe I'll try an airlayer on one of my larger branches of a nigra graft down a couple of years ago.

Has anybody receive partial orders and later receive other part of the order?
Today was a very disappointing day for me. I received my shipment and it was 4 things in it in 2 Lbs package with 2nd day delivery I had Mulberry Pakistan and Mulberry Saharanpur, Figs Excel and Monstrueuse (great big cuttings) but...uhm...where is my main order?
Mary had told me she would combine my later (in late December) order to my older order (from Feb 2013), so I was pretty sure I would receive the entire thing. They just shipped my Feb 2013 order and maybe ignored the Dec 2013 order? This is painful!

there should be a invoice in the package. it would list all the ordered item and if some of them were not available, it will be marked as such. not sure if they ship things more than once. it's free services so whatever comes is a gift.

the invoice clearly states what they have sent. it's my old order 100% fulfilled. But they haven't combined my new year order (Dec 30th) where Mary was saying she will combine it.; i'm going to call her, hope she picks up, they have been rerouting the calls to a machine.

Orders for dormant cuttings or budwood must be received by November 1st, and are shipped in March-April.

Very odd! I got the e-mail from UC Davis that my cuttings are on the way. I gave them my Fed-Ex number and they are sending them UPS. Anyone else have this happen?

Makes me feel awful because I really wanted to carry my own shipping costs.

Not yet!

I'm sorry, Harvey, I did not see your question.  I've ordered both M. alba and M. nigra.  I think the only one that's taken was M. alba Hunza Black.

Is anyone else still waiting on their order that was placed prior to deadline, or I am standing here by myself.

I'm standing with you.

Tami,

I hope the same thing doesn't happen to me.  I have already contacted FedEx to reroute my package.  Since it is my account, they will let me do this.  I do not think I can reroute a UPS package on their account.

James,

Sorry I misunderstood about the Hunza black taking already. You promised to hold the door open until everyone passed. Always the gentleman.

You guys aren't standing alone for sure. I placed this order March 2013. She told me a couple of weeks ago they were processing them in the order received SO if you placed it after last March 15th it will be after mine.

Hunza Black was last year.  This is my fourth time ordering mulberry cuttings.

Looks like I have 8 months to go.

I checked my date, it was March 17th :(
I thought this year I would be getting none but maybe I was wrong (I hope)!

James,

I rooted an Ischia White last year. It looks like a dwarfish plant, has a lot of close spaced nodes and is covered with figs! I think I will have a chance to taste them this year.
It was not a fast grower but I do not see any signs of the FMV.
Good luck with yours!

James, that's odd with the rooting problems of Morus alba.  There may be some differences between some varieties but they should not be significant.  I've done Oscar easily and then this somewhat unknown one (friend just calls it Black Beauty Compatible).  I failed on all attempts with Morus nigra.

Tami, they are not filling in order.  My order was placed last August.  I ordered a couple of more in December and those will come next year I guess.  Last year I communicated with Howard about something and he convinced me to try another variety that we had discussed and they shipped it even though it was after the deadline.  This year they are just really jammed.  I wouldn't be surprised if they are going to change their policy on who they ship to since it seems to have overwhelmed their capacity.

Harvey,

My experience matches more with James.  A few cultivar mulberry have rooted readily for me, most have not. Some have rooted and then faded, so maybe I just have not got it down yet. Most all callus heavy for me with the exception of Girardi  Dwarf, and most places it is listed as Alba, but never seemed to even attempt to root for me.   I don’t believe a Alba is a Alba is a Alba.  There seems to be inconsistency on species labeling. You mentioned Oscar. USDA Davis lists Oscars as a hybrid, but lists another Oscar as Nigra. At least what is generally available as Oscar is not Nigra in my thoughts.  Whitman farms calls Oscar as Alba.  Kokuso is a good example USDA Davis calls it Alba, Whitman Farms I believe labels it a cross,   Burnt Ridge calls it Morus latifolia. Pakistan according to USDA  and Edible landscape is Morus macroura , Whitman Farms and Burnt Ridge label it Alba.

Not that I want to quote  Wiikipedia  as an authority on fruits, but I do agree with this statement “The taxonomy of Morus is complex and disputed. Over 150 species names have been published, and although differing sources may cite different selections of accepted names, only 10–16 are generally cited as being accepted by the vast majority of botanical authorities. Morus classification is even further complicated by widespread hybridization, where in the hybrids are fertile.”

Then you have Morus Nigra, which I understand is a hybrid that originated somewhere in Asia but is found nowhere in the wild today, and that all our Nigra cultivars are just mutations from each other. It’s different in it’s chromosome count with I believe 308 as opposed to 28 of the other species, and as I understand it’s a sterile plant.  The graft failed I did try of my Black Beauty and another scion I received from USDA that was not listed as Nigra, but the buds sure looked like Nigra to me, for what little I know as ID seems complicated.

I tried baggies w/moss, Root Riot cubes, paper towels, etc.  Always the same thing... the tops went crazy before root formation.  I thought Girardi was going to go (I think it was three years ago) when I pulled it out of the SM and there was a root, but it never progressed from there.  If I do not have luck this year, I will buy one or two to grow.

YAY, doin' the happy dance. Just got the UC Davis order and it is huge! I got everything I asked for with the exception of Ischia Black but lucky for me someone with fig faries in his yard sent me a plant!

I got all the pomegranates I asked for and I think I need a bigger place!
