Good day, here is a picture of Gulbun Selection 284.  It was excellent and will make you cry at the first bite!  It was that good!  I added this one to my list request for cuttings.

I have to say, this fig was excellent at UCD. Hope to get a few cuttings next year.

Glad to hear it. I have a couple of small Gulbun but I don't know the source. I hope they are a good as that one looks.

That should be "284-11" not "254"

A member here included a Galbun as a bonus in a shipment.  Quoting member, "I have to lean against the fence when I eat one,"  It's that good!  I know this thread is about Gulbun, but maybe they are related?

They are synonyms on the UCD site, but they are not the same here, in anyway.

Go to Figs 4 Fun Varieties, select the4 variety that you are interested in, say UCR 284-11, Click on "More Info", Then "Accession data" and you will see DFIC102 and you will see info for UCR 284-11, including Various synonyms ("Identifiers"), where it came from, what its genetic parentage is, if it was from the Condit breeding program, such as UCR 284-11 was.

Probable desired fig: Smith, St Jean, JH Adriatic, CddB, Gulbun, Pastilliere, Sucrette

Rooting:  Smith, CDDB--this pretty much means I have my fun tries (tho' important since they are truly desirable), and only interested for this year: Gulbun, BM, 187-25, or something wildly exotic or precious that nobody has any good reason to send me.

I've seen the fig spelled, Galbun, Gilbun and now Gulbun.  This is confusing.  Has anyone gotte figs of all three spellings and grown them to see the differences?

Noss, I think it's a major misspelling of the name. But like John shows in his more info section, the names are "also known as". JR call it Galbun and I have 2 of his trees. UCD calls it Gulbun. To me, researching figs is like doing your family tree. There are known sources of a name but are they the same? Yes!

For example, my grandmother on my mom's side was full blooded American Indian. For years, no one ever could prove she American Indian until I spent weeks searching the US archives. Her maiden name was Bohannon. Her dead certificate spells it Bohannan. But the US Census of Oklahoma from the Choctaw 5 Civilized Tribes back in 1930 spells her name as Irene Bohanan. So, which name is correct? To me, they all are correct and the same goes for figs. All of the names sound the same. But when folks start writing down the name, that's were we start to see how they spell it.

HOW BOUT THOSE FIGS!!!!!

The selection Galbun 184-11 is not Galbun, as a reminder.  The spelling, otoh?  You're on your own.

Whups!  I double checked and looks like Galbun is the same as 184-11 is the same as Galbun 184-11.  Sorry about that.

I know most like black figs.  BUT, this is one that get overlooked at UCD.  It's truly excellent!

I have a Gulbun I bought from Brugmansia last year that grew very well. I hope it gives me a couple figs this year to try! :)

Dennis, has Gulbun fruited for you yet?  If so, does Gulbun produce breba for you?  I saw where Jon reported that it did for him one year.  Mine didn't fruit yet last year.

Good day Harvey! No, not yet and there are no brebas on it either. Its a good tasting fig. My 2 are in SWPs with UPM. UPM is NOT a good medium to use for SWPs. In a 90 degree Carolina day, I have to either water twice or move the tree under shade. Mine came from JR and is a keeper.
