UC Davis order

  • Ard

I am pleased this has been cleared up and hope you can get your requests Peg.
I see there is a likely difference in a curators eyes of a warehoused, diminishing supply of germplasm available as seeds, and a yearly replenishing supply of, if still finite, clonal material.
It would be interesting to look at final numbers on requested material. What was most sought after, and which have not been requested for the last 5 or 10 years even. Is it like stamp collectors suddenly interested in the country we are currently at war with, or the faddish color cycles that tomato growers seem to experience?

I hate to throw a wrench into the works, but I went to my local post office (where generally they are pretty good about humoring me) and they told me they didn't have an $8.95 stamp I could purchase for a flat rate priority envelope.  I bought $8.95 worth of postage and I hope that the Davis people understand.

I will send off a copy of my request along with the postage tomorrow.

Thank you for the discussion which has occurred here, as I would have been clueless in Feb otherwise.

Chills, After James so kindly posted the new information and instructions I emailed Angelique, sending a copy of my order and asked if she would reinstate it and I would send the stamp to Jeremy Smith. I have not received a reply. I then sent the same information to J. Smith. I have not received a reply from him either. At this point I'm just waiting in limbo.
Peg

I will also email Jeremy Smith and should I receive a reply I will let you know what he says, please do the same for me if you recieve a reply first.

I really would like to get this done as wasn't the deadline December?

Chills, Will do, but don't hold your breath!

reply to my email to Mr. Smith.

Dear Sir,

You do not need to include the information in parenthesis.  One Shields Ave. suffices for the US Postal Service.  Yes, you may address it to me.

Best,
Jeremy Smith

Glad to have sent it out already!

No matter what!

Tomorrow Dec 1, is the deadline date for  next 2008 spring UCD dormant cutting ordering.

Have you ordered your  must_have "coffee" stuff yet?

George (NJ).
P.S. I think that  UCD personnel (from the most I hear) ,  are being very
cooperative to accommodate  ALL us (fignuts).

I just read this thread for the first time today.  Maybe my perspecitive is just different - possibly wrong - but I think if we want this wonderful resource to remain available we should simply do it the way they ask us to - the way they are accustomed to handling these requests - and not by creating hassles, headaches and additional work for them.

hlyell, It is a wonderful resource, but they are already telling us amateurs that they can't handle our requests anymore.
I ordered from Davis for the first time this year and was surprised to see that they were  stating that they only wanted to send material to people doing research.  They said that just plain folks should look for commercial sources.  They are trying to limit availability now.
They can't afford to send out wood the way they were doing it - and apparently we couldn't afford it either.  This way we can at least cover our shipping at a reasonable cost to us, and at the same time relieve them of having to pay top dollar.  I think this change will help them save some money and hopefully preserve our access to fig varieties.
