This will be the first year that I will be requesting cuttings from UC Davis and would like the benefit of those who have ordered before.

1. Are 15 cuttings the limit? Not that I am complaining, mind you.

2. When do they ship them out? January, February?

3. When requesting from http://www.ars.usda.gov/Main/docs.htm?docid=12871

is there a good probability that they are available?

4. Of the dozens of cultivars to choose from, which ones are the "must haves",  in your experience or opinion (top 5).

Thanks.

1. No

2. Feb to Apr

3. Generally, but not all.

4. Play

this helps me also, thanks. have to love those answers. short and sweet. that way there's no confusion. good health, luke

1. I thought it was 15 variety limit.  You often get 3 cuttings of each var you request.  Unless they have shortages of some vars.  I only got 1 cutting of VdB last year.

3. That page you listed says,
"Repository Inventory of Available Accessions for Ficus" so those vars are available, but no guarantee of quantity.

4. go with the most talked about vars here on this board.  It will take years to collect all the good ones.

I don't ask for many cutting from UCD.  I got cuttings for five vars last year, and this year I only requested seven vars.  It's easy to ask for more than you can handle.

Good luck and enjoy.

BTW, this link will list all the vars UCD has growing, but only those listed on the page you posted are available for cutting distribution.

Actually, that link only lists the fircu carica accessions, but not the hybrids, such as DFIC0023.

Yoohoo! It took less than a week to receive confirmation of  request!

How cautious should I be of  UC Davis fmv possibly infecting the rest of my fig trees?

Based on my taste buds, here's what I put together. http://www.treesofjoy.com/content/sampling-figs-uc-davis-fig-orchard

FMV is a fact of life. If you think you don't have it, you probably have varieties which don't show a lot of symptoms. Everything at Davis has it. It will be transferred to your supposedly pristine trees.

If that is an issue for you, don't order from Davis, Encanto Farms, Trees of Joy and any other mail order nursery or local nursery selling trees.Haven't received an uninfected tress from any source, except possibly Paradise Nursery, and all of their products can/will be infected after exposure to an infected tree.

ok fmv...how does it tranfer?? say one tree doesn't have it...how will it get it????? from bugs?? from rubbing on a infected plant?? thru the dirt?? wind blowing???WHAT???? from what i see from pics of everyone's trees, most are grouped together...so touching??? does anyone have an answer?? i did a seach and really didn't see an answer. should of made this a seperate new topic, maybe more people would see it and comment.  luke

Bass, thanks for putting that list together. It will come in handy next year. Perhaps I should have asked which figs should be avoided.

Really, I hadn't even heard of fmv before joining the forum. There is no reason why my trees should be pristine and if fmv is as ubiquitous as that then I won't worry about it.

The answers to your questions are uninmportant.  The bottom line is simple:  All of your trees will get FMV, and they probably already have FMV.  It is typically spread by mites, you can't see them, you don't know if they're there, you can't do anything about them.  Just know you probably already have FMV infected trees, and you're bound to acquire FMV-infected material anyway.

I must be doing something wrong because I emailed my order in several weeks ago and still have heard nothing. Any suggestions?

afigfan, I  emailed my order nearly a month ago, sent a follow up, and just yesterday got a confirmation of the order.  So, due to staffing, etc, constraints it does take a while, but if it's been a month, you might write a follow up.  Reading suggestions from other members, here's what I wrote:

My original order sent a while ago and might not have gotten to the right people. I have not heard a confirmation it was received, thus  I am re-submitting it, in case the email was lost in transit. Thanks for your help!

I submitted an order September 10th and received a reply on the 14th. I don't know whether it made any difference in how quickly it got processed, but before placing the order I went through this thread:

and tried to follow the suggestions very closely.

i think i ordered about 9 different ones. if i follow what i did and if it works, i should have good set of trees by next winter.

was told it will ship out around march. it should be warm around here to keep it indoor till april, and then leave it outside.

I sent my order on 8/20 and got the email today.  I guess they're catching up on the recent orders.

I sent my order in on 8/23 and just received my email confirmation number today.

Confirmation email received! I can now do my long awaited happy dance.
