Finally, a dark fig.

Can wait till mine fruits!

Vernino has been on every UCD order I've submitted.  It's on next years order as well.  I have yet to have success with this one, but I'm still trying.

I have it!  Got mine from Luke a month or two ago!  YAY!

I visited someone who had a very small tree - less than a foot tall. It was 10 years old. Gopher damage I was told. It had only 3 green shoots on it. I was given one to try to root. And it did. It's not the most vigorous of rooted cuttings, but I just checked and it's still alive. One green leaf, and one green bud. We will see if it prospers.

Does Vernino need to be pollinated? In my experience it seems as though the best looking figs always need pollination.

Isn't Vernino a late variety? By late I mean too late for northern growers to get ripe figs. It does look delicious though. Nice looking figs Dennis. The bluish color reminds me of a Concord grape.

Henry: Vernino does not require pollination.

Tony: It is, indeed, a very late variety. I had Vernino for four seasons and never got a single fruit. Last year my small tree produced about 10 figs and even in a long (for Reno) hot growing season not a single fruit looked even close to ripening by the time the plant called it a season and dropped its leaves in late November. I gave the tree away a couple of weeks ago to another member who's latitude isn't much different than mine but whose growing season is, at least, predictably longer. He'll still likely need a greenhouse to get ripe fruit.

Wow! Now that's a late fig for sure. I will scratch that one off my "to keep" list. No sense in growing something that will never ripen figs and take up valuable space. Thanks Neil.

Hi Dennis i recall you saying you have Vernino around 6ft or so. Was thinking about this plant today as i had to up pot it this morning.
What i'm wondering is do you see any figs on your plant and if so if you recall about when did they appear.

I hear much about it beinging late variety and all so im curious.

Hi, Dieseler

I don't know if this helps you because I am in California. The Vernino aka Pasquale is one of my favorite fig trees because it is the only fig tree that I have that produces figs from August to as late a December. My tree has small figs on it now. They started about the same time as my other figs. My tree is only 6 feet tall even though it is over 15 years old! I am not sure what the reason is for this.

Martin, I just came in the house an hour ago.....took a shower.....and ate my dinner. I just finished redesigning parts of my irrigation system. As soon as I sat down, BOOM, the rain started. It's like Seattle here in Charlotte! For the past week in a half, it has rained every day! I know I got 2 Vernino fig tree but I forgot where I placed them. You know you got too many figs when you have to do a search for a tree! I found it.

Well, I grabbed my umbrella and trotted outside and checked. My tree does not have any figs yet, just 40 bumps. I do remember it being a late variety. I got some special fertilizer that I plan on dumping on it. I gave some to my 2 Black Ischias 2 weeks ago. Today, they are growing with 4 figs on.

Oh Dennis you did not have to got out in the rain for me. lol
Wont have anything this season and perhaps next season but patient as i have feeling this is a good one .
The leaves somewhat remind me of maderia plant in our yard least at this small stage of plant, Jons pictures of the figs bear a little resemblance also.
Thanks again for your input.

been looking at this one, but haven't ordered it yet. more figs than i really should have at this point. but would love to see how it does in chicago. if it makes in north, it should do well here.

I've got it growing here. Looking forward to when it is old enough to fruit.

Pete, almost any will do fine here if you use microclimates and put them into your garage for protection over winter.

I have two Vernino plants that I grew from a single USDA cutting cut in half. Both have been slow growers but interestingly enough one of them suddenly put on about a foot and a half of new growth last year while its other half has perhaps grown an inch so far. No figs to speak of on either but I am hoping for great things. I find it very strange that two halves of the same cutting can grow so differently.

This quote was written just over a year and a half ago. The plant, while not the most vigorous in the world, has grown to almost 2 feet tall (in a 5 gal pot), and now, in May, is developing a good number of figs. The largest 2 are about an inch long.

It ripened a couple figs in the early months of the year, but they were nothing to write home about. Too cold and days too short to develop much flavor. These should be much better.

didn't get to fig stuff this weekend. but i do need to put Vernino and Dauphine into cup soon.. and make boxes for the 1 gals i need to send out.. urgh.. hope i'm not too late.

Last year mine ripened starting 10-18 which was pretty late. Was first year to do so and therefore I didn't rate the figs. There is another topic thread  on this one that Martin and I have been sharing.

Yes. I'd forgotten. Several people were posting to it including me, lol.  Post #58 in that thread shows my little tree with it's almost ripe fruit. Interesting to see how my Vernino has changed in just a couple months. :)
