Does anyone know which CdD cutting UC Davis offers? Gris, Noire, other?

Labeled as DFIC0074.

.

I have it, picked it up from JD.  I'm to understand it's blanc.  I know of blanc, gris, noir (white, grey, black).

asked same question a year ago. it's blanche. you can look it up in jon's variety database.

Well, Ok. Thanks.

Now I am wondering  how much of a taste difference there is between the 3..

Anyone have the opportunity of comparing the trio?

I remember that Dan (from Louisiana / Dan_la) indicated he has both blanc/blanche and noir in his collection, and was eager to try them.  He didn't have gris at the time (7/2011).  He never did follow up on his findings, whether his noir fruited or not.

That thread:  http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/Col-De-Dame-White-5413554

i should have blanche and noir soon. i have blanche rooted, and noir is coming in as trade around end of june, rooted cutting. if everything goes right, i should be able to tell what they taste like by.. hmm.. if lucky by fall of 2013? lol

edit: what i really want is gris.

UCDavis has Col de Dame Blanche aka white.  See pic below from last year at UCD.

thanks,

dennis,

how did that CdDB taste?

pete

It was a little bit on the sour side.  The best green fig tasted there was Excel.

was it just gone sour and not at the pick? or is it just sour in general? i'll make sure to put excel on my list of cuttings to order from UCD.

Some of the figs were starting to sour and spoil.  You had to really look hard for some ripe one.  The one in the pic was starting to sour.  I spent 30 iminutes climbing the 12 foot later for some figs, like Panache.  But there is only one ladder and Jon hogged it!!!!  :)

Remember, figs ripen at different times of the season.  We were only there for a day and a half so, if we had arrived there say....a day or 2 before maybe these would have been better.  It's hard to pick the right time to go there but that date was prime time for fig ripening.  Don't get me wrong, we did taste some other awesome figs.  Don't let my interpretation change you mind on this fig.  I got one in a container and a Col De Dame Gris.  Both are awesome in flavor and taste.

dennis,

thanks for the info. i'll see if mine will survive this year and give me some figs next year or so.

Dennis, My favorite Green fig at UCD this past visit was Sucrette. Best dark fig for me was Zidi. I think I missed Excel...so many figs, so little time! ;-)

Previous visit was Maribout C Smyrna, Black Ischia and Panachee. I'm hoping I can beat the squirrels (or opossum or raccoons) to the Panachee in my yard this year...

UCD Collection has Col de Dame white,DFIC 74
I had ,Col de Dame white and grei(grise),that got ripe here.
Col de Dame Grise (grey),is superior in everything, taste flavor, cold hardeness, and the willing to grow here.
Col de Dame White like other cultivars originating at UC D ,is very hard to grow or ripe here because of lack of adaptability to cold climate (OR),  a notorious strain of Fig mosaic virus, worse than any other coming from Europe or Asia.
I also have Col de Dame Black, but it did not get ripe last year, tho is the same age as the Grise.
2011 was a cold rainy year here,so that is a serious excuse, that is why,I hope it will ripe this year and will surprise me ,by surpassing Col de Dame grise in flavor and taste.
But I doubt it will.
Col de Dame Grise is heavenly sweet and flavorful.

I have two CdD Blanch plants from UCD that I rooted in 2010. They have been very slow growers for me. Even so I had two figs off of them (one each) last fall. While they were late and really needed another couple of weeks of hot weather rather than the cool weather they ripened in, I could tell that they were different and almost certainly better than any of my other green(ish) figs that have ripened for me thus far. I'm excited for this year. They are off and growing at a better rate so far this year, I've potted them up and I'm going to sink both into the ground a few inches in the hope that they'll push a few roots out of their pots and really put on some growth.

I rooted several CdD Noir cuttings this spring and they are growing well in 1 gal pots. Pete will be on the receiving end of one of them later this year when I swap him for a KB air layer. I hope that I'll have a fig or three next year to compare. Perhaps at some point I'll find somebody who will trade me a CdD Gris cutting and I'll see how a high desert Col de Dame trio perform.

See Col de Dame for pix of the accession at USDA / UC Davis.

UCD CdDB. started rooting in 3/25 or something like that. out of 3 cuttings i made from 1 long cutting, only two made it. out of two, this one is doing much better.

Posturedoc,

Can you tell me what other green figs you have that you could tell this CdDB fig was going to be so much better then?
Thanks, mgginva
