UCDAVIS cuttings suggestion

Currently I have 3 Celeste and 3 unknown green fig trees. I think I am getting addicted to figs. Please advise if following figs are good choice to order from ucdavis:

1. Ischia Black
2. Adriatic
3.Violet de Borddeaux
4. Black Madeira
5. Golden Celeste

Thanks in advance for your input.

Singh

Violet de Borddeaux & Black Madeira are very famous in taste. Have not tasted yet!

Singh,

I think a good or bad choice of fig depends on your growing conditions/location/climate. There is no absolute good or totally bad fig (well, some might disagree on this.. ). They have to fit your environment. Your list includes very good varieties but please check the forum and see what other people from NY say about them growing in the NY.

This is just a suggestion :)

Does UC Davis have a list of fig varieties for which you can get cuttings? Spent about 45 minutes perusing various portions of their web site and did not find any information on what might be available, who is qualified to order or how to order. Help.

Thank you very much.

Thanks

Has anyone called to ask if they're still going to honor orders?

It took about an hour this morning but I got another e-mail for the repository and have e-mailed to ask if they will be filling orders. We'll see what the answer is. The gal I spoke to at the fruit and nut repository said she had heard rumors but had nothing concrete.

Tami,
The rumors were about them shipping or NOT shipping ??
Please let us us know when you get the reply to your email.

I will absolutely let everyone know what reply I get if any. It may be a case of them not knowing for sure either.

For whatever it's worth, on 9/8/2013 I emailed the "orders" email address asking for an update on two orders I had placed - one in January and another in March.  It's now been two weeks with no response back.  I simply asked them to confirm that both orders were still "active" and, if possible, to provide an approximate ETA.

EDIT/UPDATE:  After making that last post, I figured I'd call a contact there who verified my orders were still in the system, although, said they probably wouldn't ship until spring.  I did ask and there was no indication that they would not honor existing orders or accept new orders in the future.

Tami is doing the happy dance!!!!! I just got this e-mail from UC Davis;

Dear Tamera,

We received and entered your order.  Your cuttings will be collected this winter and will be shipped in Feb-March 2014.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

NO you all may not call me by that name!

I think if you are the only one to get cuttings from them (I haven't gotten an email), you should have to share yours with ALL of us....and if you don't, we are ALL going to call you Tamera....teehee....j/k.  Glad you heard from them.  At least we know now that they are still planning to send out cuttings.  =)

Tami, I am your biggest supporter....don't forget about me.....LOL

Watch out Jules, Meghan told me where you live LOL.

Tami its good to hear that they are still honoring cutting orders.  Let us know if you hear anything else from them.

Tami,
Have you provided them with a Fedex/UPS shipping account?
Is it a must to get the cuttings this year?

Tami>> Oh no!  You're not going to send ninja fig trees to assassinate me are you??  >=)   LMBO.

greenfig>> I don't remember there being a place on the order form that I used asking for a FedEx/UPS account #.  I may not get mine if it's a necessity.  =(  If anyone hears or knows for sure, please post.

I received same email yesterday! *wooooohoooo!* :)

I have never had a problem with UC Davis!  My Fed Ex account number seems to work for them.  I order many cuttings each year, and they all arrive, but many are not figs.  Our vineyard IS the priority, and you all know that!  I order vinefera first, and some random fig or 2 next.

Even if you don't get a response, if your fed ex account is in order, you will get a shipment in March or April.  This said from experience, and a lot of it.

Suzi

Figaro, congrats on our email too!  =)  Maybe we all will be getting emails in the near future.

suzi, do you put your fed ex account number in the comments part on the order?  Or do they contact you for that?

Coming back to Sing's question, it is better to check if there is someone in your area growing Black Madeira. It surely needs good long summer to ripen. I have two plants for the past four year and never got a ripe fig in Zone 5a.

Edit: Panache is another one that has never ripened here and stays on plant like a beautiful striped big marble.
