UC-Davis ordering?

  • jtp

I was thinking of requesting cuttings from UC-Davis this year (maybe a fig or two, but mostly mulberries and pomegranates), but found myself a bit confused when I looked at the site. I was hoping someone here could help out.

First, how much does it cost? Do you pay now or later? Is the shipping reasonable? The site was not very clear (perhaps I was looking at the wrong page). I don't want to request and then find myself beyond my budget.

Also, the form specifies that you declare your "organization." Well, it's just me. Do I need to have a business or do they send to individuals? If so, how are you filling in that part of the form?

Deadline is Nov. 1, so I have to get cracking. Thanks in advance.

You pay for shipping only. You must have a UPS or FEDEX account set up and listed on the request. Just write the same info as on the other side in the organization line and " Researching horticultural efficacy in South-Central TX (example)" as the intended use. Costs are reasonable. Much cheaper than buying the same amount of cuttings. Good luck!

Thank you. That helps.

I think if youre going to request cuttings from uc davis you should at least be willing to pay the shipping costs.....these programs are expensive to run.

Their new system is much easier to use than the previous one!  I love it!  But, as Reuben pointed out, you need to get a free Fed Ex account tied to a credit card.  This is so easy!  I try not to order more than 10 species of any genus per order.  I have never been disappointed with my UC Davis orders.  This year I ordered a few figs, a few wine grapes, and a couple pom's and prunus... oh, and a couple olives!

I just tell them I am researching how certain varieties do in my climate.

this is my last yr ordering from UCD for figs. i love the service UCD does. however, i'm finding that i have what i want and no longer want any on the list there. i did offer to send them some of the cuttings i have back to them which are not on their list. never heard back from them. it reminds me of a song by monty python.. "i've left my body to science, but i'm afraid they've turned it down.."

For the record, I don't believe I ever said I was not willing to pay shipping. I'd pay for the cuttings if it were within my budget. I've just never sent a request to UCD, so I was curious as to how it all worked. Thank you to those who gave helpful feedback. I appreciate it.

Can anyone please tell me what they put for "organization" on the online form? That one has me stumped, as I am not an organization or business.

john,

i leave organization "N/A". i put in purpose as "testing/researching figs in my local area". last year my order came back because i didn't put my phone number in.

Where can I find the link to U C davis?

Jpeaspanen,
Yes, the shipping can cost a lot so you should consider what you are ordering. I had spoken with someone there and they don't mind shipping something via a slower method on FedEx or ups. Something like 2 day shipping is a lot cheaper than overnight. However, if you order plants that require mist propagation or something that requires your immediate attention, then they will ship your entire order overnight including stuff that doesn't require immediate opening. If I'm not mistaken, I think that's why I took olives out of my order. I sort of got lucky because they shipped my stuff but for some reason they used their own UPS account and didn't charge my account. It was a huge box too.

Well, I got my order put in last night. So far, so good. Just a few things. I didn't want to take more than I could use. Can anyone tell me - When do you see the shipping charges? Is it in January or February or is it earlier?

It's late March or April.

Thank you Jason! Hopefully I did it correctly.( Probably not) I appreciate you taking the time to help out.
