uh oh

Well now. My fridge went out. Its dead. Its maaking heat instead of cool. Its also where I was storing my cuttings that I haven't got to rooting yet. Unfortunatly some have been lost to the wind like black spanish and black greek that I got from a very kind member. Some of my own stash has gotten furry friends. I'm hoping they will be ok after a good cleaning. Today my first day off in some time from the nursing home was spent cleaning and potting up 50 figs that I'm hoping will make it. I am sure they will as they were still nice and green when scraped. So far the only ones lost for sure are as said black greek, black spanish, and a small florea. Any ideals on how the rest my fair out. I was able to get some started back in november and december. Any ideals, here's hoping.

Where can a guy get a good fridge for cheep. Nothing fancy

Craigslist... might even be free for pick up. good luck.

Did you try a manual defrost Dave? Sometimes a vent or something frosts over and hat is the only problem.

That sucks.

Sorry to hear that garden whisperer.  Craigslist and freecycle.org are probably worth checking.

Yep. That happened to us about a year ago. But we did not manual defrost. Something must have been blocked but when it got warm enough inside, it started working after being turned on again - without a problem. I did toss a lot of food that got too warm however. Bummer.

I got a second, almost new frig on Craig's list which I keep at 53*F as a 'wine cellar/cheese cave'. It was a great deal.

That's a bummer.  In November 2011 my walkin defrost clock quit working at the same time the defrost high-temp safety shut-off was broken and I lost the remaining $10,000 of my chestnut inventory, so I have a pretty good how a big disappointment feels!

One cheap fairly economical method for storing lots of cuttings is to buy a used chest freezer and buy an axillary thermostat which you can program to whatever temperature you want.  Runs something like $100 + $75 and is very versatile and doesn't dry things out so badly.  I first heard of the idea from someone who stores his apples in such a setup but have since read that some home brewers use this for controlling the temperature of their batch while brewing.

Hi Garden_Whisperer,
Go to the garden ( if you have one) with a shovel make a 50 cm*50 cm*50 cm hole - well a one meter depth would be better but ...
Put the cuttings inside, and put some wood frame over the hole. Put some straw/plastic cover over that, if you have, and you should be done .
Here, some do conserve their carrots like that during the winter.

Sorry about your fridge problem.  I like jdsfrance's idea!  We sold both a freezer and a fridge on Craigslist for CHEAP!  JD just wanted them OUT of his garage!  They were left from his mom's estate and both worked just fine.  Good luck to you!
