Has anyone in the UK/Europe had any problems importing cuttings or small (60cm) trees from the Canary islands or Israel?

There seems to be instructions that you can bring back 5 packets of seeds without a phyto certificate or no more than 2kg's of bulbs/corms. I wonder if cuttings are included?

Canary islands are part of Spain then part of the EU...

Within the EU no need any paperwork.


Israel is another story....

On the web site it says that you can bring back a limited amount of plants but only certain types, potatoes, for example, are banned. There's a gentleman in the Canary islands that doesn't label the contents as being plants/cuttings so I was wondering what the issue there is since it is part of the EU there shouldn't be a problem - I've bought several orchids from there with no problems at all so why not simply label them.

I have bought many fig trees from nurseries and collectors within the EU. There are no restrictions to buy from the EU until they trigger "Article 50" lol. 
You buy from Israel at your own risk. If they find plant material from outside the EU then they will confiscate and destroy it and you will get a call/letter from the HMRC as a courtesy.

Importing from non-eu countries is no problem as long as you get it from a nursery which has a phytocenitary certificate. This is granted easily by the authorities and is just leading to regular inspectations of your nursery just like the inspections known for organic farmers likewise. In most cases/countries this is very expensive for the nursery. Pepinieres Baud for example is able to ship worldwide this way.

And Ficus carica stays that easy to import as long as it does not appear on the host list für Xylella fastidosa illness.

I agree with you dear magnificco. If the seller provide Phytosanitary certificate you can import provided you have got an import licence. But what's the need when we got hundreds of Fig varities to try from Europe itself. Furthermore if you need the US varities then Harvey at figaholics is an excellent source and provide phytosanitary certificate. The easiest way is to be quiet and do as you like lol. I don't want to give wrong advice to anyone , I've been told off before haha.

The canaries are part of the territory of eu member Spain but they are not part of the European union customs area. For this reason the rules for non eu states are valid.
