Unexpected result with T.C. VdB & C. Hardy

I bought 6 Chicago Hardy plants from Hirts Nursery and 4 Violette de Bordeaux from Wellspring 5 months ago; They were tissue cultures. All were 4" tall and the VdBs were more vines than rooting twigs.

I repotted them into quarter gallon pots and conditioned them to half shade over the first week and full sun over the first month. They were watered every other day. Each pot received a quarter measure of Osmocote Plus slow release fertilizer.

Two months ago I pinched most of them except 1 vigorous Chicago Hardy. They were all repotted last month, given a half measure of the fertilizer and moved under an overhang of the house facing south because of the intense sun/ temperature. I didn't want to water 2-3 times a day.

The goal was to have enough shoots to air layer and propagate to make a living fence so the increasing branching and suckers were welcomed, but the surprise was the figlet nubs I noticed last week. I thought they could also be lateral branching nubs too until now.

Has anyone tried pinching tissue culture figs with similar results?

Wow! Impressive results!  I have quite a few myself that are doing well.  Was going to start transitioning today as they are all 9-12" tall now.  Put some in the shade and the leaves started to curl within minutes.  Had to put them back.  It's going to take some time.

I did not pinch any but after seeing your results, going to give it a shot.  Thanks for posting Dan.

Wow.  Your plants look great.  Your results are making me reconsider TC plants.

Everything you did was perfect. VDB seems to put on figs from wellsprings. Other varieties not so much. Just my observation.

Definitely give it a try. They seem to thrive much more after the stress of pinching, especially if they have enough light, water, and fertilizer.

Thanks. I guess it was a lucky pick with Wellspring VdB.
