Unique Problem: Too Many Figs!

I am so lucky to have twin trees that produce tons of large delicious fruit year after year. Unfortunately, I can't possibly use them all and most go to waste. Last year I made ten jars of fig jam and chutney, froze 5-6 large freezer bags and still could not keep up.

I invite anyone in the area to help themselves to these glorious figs.

JD where are you?

If you do not know the name of this cultivar,it is Alma.

Hmmmmmmmmm

I thought it looked  just like a TX. Everbearing (white)

Wht Texas ev. look close to this, but exterior color is not so dark,as it is a white fig.
Also leaves (decurent),and duck foot, shape are unique to Alma, and that is why I know,it is Alma

Oh, I'm not doubting you Herman!

Alma it is........

FMD--what a nice problem to have! Wish I was close enough to take some off your hands. Do you not have many birds, or is the tree simply so big the birds can't eat them all?

ALMA,is notoriously, unproductive for me,here in NJ,yet so productive in the south.
You know Cecil,I should hahe gone with your guess, because I still have a couple of White Texas ev, for sell, but ,better tell the true because the true will set me free!!!Ha ha.
Any way, I  am sure White Texas ev. can be just as precocious, and just as tasty, in the right climate, just like Alma does.

Dreaming of the day that I have that problem!  Wonderful looking tree!

Again....I fully agree with you Herman.

BTW..I do not have Alma no more!   And am not looking for one.

EDIT

FMD what I said against my Alma has nothing whatsoever to do with your GREAT tree!

WOW!!!

I had forgotten the name, so thanks for the reminder, guys.
There are plenty of birds around but just like me, they can only eat so many.

why not dry some in a food dehydrator?  If they last till Thanksgiving I can stop by and help you out of this quandry ....

Look tasty! The birds got most of my small crop this year, but my trees are still very small. It should get better as they grow.

PM sent!

When unfrozen you can use them to make jam, chutney, breads etc. but no, they will not be fresh.

BTW, are the figs on the forum banner also Almas?

From my point of view no:
They are Encanto Brown Turkey

FMD, the proper use of dried figs is the following, the traditional Sicilian Christmas cookie... I'll see if my MIL can make some for my trip to TallaMaHassee  at turkey day...

Alan, I had a friend, he's gone to an orchard in the sky now, who loved to peel his figs and then freeze them. His figs were brown turkey so he added a little sugar to them before he froze them. He put them in small plastic cups and when he wanted to eat some, he took a cup out of the freezer let it defrost a bit and then ate them like ice cream. I haven't tried it yet but will when I have my first year with too many figs. I love blueberries and muscadines frozen.

They look fabulously delicious!

FMD, It takes a lot of guts to post that you have "too Many Figs".

The figs at the top of the forum are Encanto Honey AKA Encanto Brown Turkey.

would you please post your recipes for jam and chutney? Thanks very much.

FMD,

Too many figs is a good problem to have :) !

Here's a couple of suggestions to help you "fix" your problem:

1).  You can "can" them whole if you have plenty of canning jars. Just use a simple syrup to fill the jars (sugar & water). Then boil the full jars in your boiling water bath canner for about 45 minutes for pints, 50 min for qts. You may need to add a little lemon juice to each jar to aid in the preserving effect. I got my info from the Ball Blue Book of Preserving. Alternately, I'm sure you could find all the info you need on canning figs/fruit via a simple Google search.

2). You can also make fig wine if you're into that sort of thing. Freezing them first has no ill effect on the final product when using them for wine. So you can pick all your freezer will hold, freeze them & then make the wine when you have the spare time.

Hope this was helpful.

Enjoy those figs ;) !

EDIT: Almost forgot this suggestion - You could also freeze up a bunch, pack them in dry ice & ship them to family members (if no family then you could just ship them all to me :-} ).

I never thought there will be a problem I would love to have. This surely is one that I would love to have. Not knowing but I was always trying to have this problem but it has always eluded me. Last year my first breba ripened on July 7 but this year it is already July 17 and no breba has ripened yet. Hopefully brebas by the end of July and main crop in mid September.
FMD, I hope you don't mind wishing you the same problem for as many years as you wish to have it.

Local farmers-market anyone?

Or anything else, local. e.g., some finicky (restaurant) chef...

Figs are best  ONLY if consumed at their right ripeness (short) time  locally;
unless the are shipped overnight (expensive!) FedEx.
I have bought figs from super markets - they tasted like I was eating straw!

Having too many fig fruits is a good blessing - you must be doing something good - my congrats...
