Unk Carini 8-18-14

My first ever of this variety. A slightly chewy but tender skin with just a little sweetness. The inside is a very refreshing honey flavored treat. About an 8.

Thanks for the feedback, Mike.  Good to see it's decent in your zone.

Frank, I believe it will get a lot better in time

It's amazing how the flesh color varies from place to place.  This is how mine looked last year.

Yea, I guess it's soil and everything else. Mine is in good old
amended Georgia Red Clay. Is the skin about the same color?

Yes, the skin is about the same as yours.

That is a good looking fig.  Both colors.  Thanks for sharing

I hope this is the same Unk Carini that I have, I would settle for an 8, especially if you feel that it will get better.

Wayne,

From my experience, I've compared the flavor of this fig from a 1 year old tree and a 12 year old tree.  They are very similar.  I wouldn't know the difference from the mature vs baby tree.  Our family has been growing this variety since the 70s and it's been consistent.
As for the soil conditions, it appears to change in characteristics, as you can see above.

Thanks for the info Frank, growing this variety since the 70s is a good sign for me. I like consistent.

Frank, I have more to ripen so I will give some updates.

And the second one today was even better. This tree is also in the ground here in the deep south and appears to be
getting its act together very well. Its hardy up north so it should do well here. A very distinctive honey/melon flavor
that is as refreshing as any light fig I have. An 8.5 and will get better

These are main crop, right Mike? If so, really good to hear. Mine will definetly get up-potted this winter, the breba was very good but I think I will be waiting at least a month to taste the main crop.

Thanks for the feedback Mike.  Great to hear the taste has improved.  I should have a couple pounds of figs from mine sometime in September.
