unk Carini - 9/29/14

This is from my 4 year old tree.  One ripe one today and it was very good.  I picked a Longue d'Aout today too, and they were both very similar in flavor, surprisingly.  I'm glad I can compare all these varieties together.

To give you all an idea of the sizing, from largest to smallest:

  1. LdA
  2. Carini (unk)
  3. Salem Dark
  4. Bari
  5. Dark Portuguese
  6. MBVS

I hope my Unk Carini turns out as nice as yours, time will tell, next years crop.

I hope for you too Wayne.

Looking good Frank! My first Carini main crop is started to swell.

Here's my first main crop Carini. Delicious fig, flavor tasted like pure honey. Firm gel texture with a tender skin that retains some bite, no seeds noticed. I shared it with my daughter and we both nibbled it to the stem. 27 grams, the flesh in the bottom is more red than it appears in the pic. It was dark and gloomy out, so no natural light to use for the pic.

Great to hear, Calvin!  A bunch of mine are starting to ripen up now.
I find it strange how this variety puts out berry flavored AND honey flavored figs.  Primarily berry flavored.  About a month ago, I had one growing on a lower branch, very close to the ground that came out with an amber flesh and honey flavors.  It tasted great, but just interesting how one tree gives me the best of both worlds.  The previous 3 years, my tree gave me red, berry-flavored figs.  The pic on my profile page shows how red they can get.  I hope you get to enjoy more!

There are about a dozen more on the tree. I have moved it into the sun room, so unless it goes dormant I should get them all. If any different flavors show up I'll add it this post. Thanks again for sharing such a great tree with us.

Hey Frank.....Sooo glad I got some cuttings from you! Have several plants! Hopefully get
Some fruit next year...: )

Hi Frank,
The Carini I am growing is from you, thanks for the cuttings last year.
Why are you calling it an Unknown Carini?
Is it no t a true Carini?
What's the story behind it?
Maybe I have missed the thread about it in past? :)
Thanks

Aaron,

I named it Carini because my relatives brought cuttings over from Carini, Italy back in the 70s.  Since it's not a DNA tested variety, giving it the 'unknown' label tells everyone this is a fig that's not registered in the fig database.

Thanks Frank

That's great to hear, Daniel.  I've tasted several new varieties this year, and it hung with the best of them.  I feel it's very close to the flavor of Longue d'Aout.
And remember, you were the first to ever trade with me a couple years ago on Garden Web forum.  You were very generous to me and I'm very grateful for that!

Hi Frank ,got to try my first unk Carini it was very good even with the cool weather that we had here.Still have a few more on the trees that should ripen keeping my fingers crossed....thank you again for your kindness...looking forward to next year.

Looks great, John.  Glad I could share these.
I had one just now, and it was super sugary sweet.  Very enjoyable.  It's been cool here lately but today we had a nice somewhat humid/75 degree day.  I think it allowed for a rush of sugars, as it drooped quickly.

We're supposed to get pretty cold by the weekend ....just hope I can pick a few more before it does...your making me want for more.

Got my 1st unk Carini today. Very sweet, delicious fig. Added to my list of keepers! Thank you for sharing a great fig, Frank.IMG_3402.JPG  IMG_3403.JPG

anyone compared this side by side with celeste I have 1 but it's yet to produce for me. from the pic's it looks like celeste to me.

Definitely not Celeste. More like Gino black. It's a med-large fig when mature.

Gary,

Glad you like it.  I've seen both amber and red flesh from my own tree, and I've seen pictures from other members with both flesh colors too.  A bit strange, but it's nice to get both flavors in one tree.  The dominant characteristics from my tree are red flesh, maroon skin with sweet berry-like flavors.

Hey Frank, after posting the pics of the first one, I went out to water, and on my other unk Carini plant, I found another ripe one. Almost identical to the 1st. Both trees are in 5 gallon, but one is going in ground soon.
