Unk. Kadota- Update 5/06/15

Hey all, my name is Mike and I`m super excited about this forum. I just recently got into growing figs. I bought my first fig tree 2 yrs ago while I was visiting Michigan, from a garage sale. I have a few other varieties bought online that were identified but my first tree had no ID. I brought it here to central Texas and planted it in ground. It might be a pretty common variety, but I was wondering if someone could help identify it. Thanks so much.

hello mike there are about 4 mikes on the forum well 1 left us the other day but it's nice to meet you. You're fig you pulled was still young, the latex or white stuff coming from the top of the fig will burn your mouth and hands, try to wait until the figs are really soft and drupe down. a ripe fig can be identified a little better as it will show us what the inside looks like better. also include a picture of the eye of the fig located at the bottom. There are collectors and immigrants both in MI who grow figs so it may take a while to identify but chances are someone has it and can help you out. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forum.
Where you located, Central Texas?
I am in East Texas, (Waskom)

I`m in Canyon Lake,TX. About a forty minute drive north of San Antonio.
Also, I cant give any pics of the eye right now. That pic was from last year. It was our first fig. I'm still not real good with ripeness and all:) Anyway, it only produced one early this year. I think it was because of drought stress. We went out of town for a couple weeks for a wedding and my sister-in-law had watering duty. Lets just say the fig was super mad and half defoliated when we returned.

It is a Kadota fig.

Welcome Mike, this forum is the place to be for information and to post what you have and what you want to share. Your fig looks nice and Herman is probably dead on, he has the experience and knowledge and has helped a lot of us. Congrats and have fun.

Welcome to the forum, Mike.

Hey Mike :)

Welcome to the forum!

Thanks everybody for the welcome, and thanks Herman for the ID. It will help me get up to speed on kadota culture.

if this is a Kadota, you ought to look at this link for pruning tips. Kadota is one of the varieties that respond extremely well to "drastic pruning".  Here is a good example of proper pruning.

ohh  nice landscaping   welcome to the group.   ;)   Joyce

Good flavor, pretty mild. I think it should have gone at least another day but the ants are better at this than me. Had another that went longer on the tree and it was a good bit sweeter. Thanks for watching.
