Unk. Venice Beach Fig...WOW

Took the family to Venice Beach yesterday and on our way back going through Canal area to get to the car I saw it...
According to the owners...30+ year old tree, looks like Semi-Dwarf to Dwarf in size, with long Redish-Purple figs, Medium to small tough and thick leaves with 1,3 and 5 lobes.
One thing I regretfully didn't do is take a picture of the inside of the fig, had no heart to pull an unripe fig  (in front of them, LOL) to do so...
Of course, they had NO IDEA what variety their fig was ;/
I promised them to stop by next time we are at Venice Beach and let them know what it possibly could be.

no need to say, I asked for cuttings, they were very helpful and generous people, one of 'em even brought a pruner to help me cut the branches.

To be continued :)

Wow great find Aaron! Beautigul figs, a beautiful shape . Good for you!!

Nice! Hopefully it's a keeper!

Only if someone could help me identify it... I'd like to return a favor to the owners by giving them some information regarding their own fig tree.
They said it's very sweet when ripe and neighbors always ask for the fruit when it's the season. It's been quite an attraction in neighborhood.
So, it's a definite keeper for me :)

Aaron great find. I hope you share cuttings.

Aaron,

It could very well be "Melanzana Calabrese".

Could be a rare find!

Those long purple figs appear to be the breba crop with the many immature main crop in various sizes forming now. It will be interesting to see what shape the main crop turn out to be as well.

Vito, thanks, you should know me by now... sharing is the key :)

donpaid, I hope it is M.C., it's been in on my wish list forever.

Calvin, you are right, those are the breba crop.

Pattee, thanks, I think so too.

Nice find!
I found that the fig trees I see growing near the people’s houses produce very good quality figs. I think they are there most of the times because they were planted as a childhood memory or as a result of somebody’s recommendation. Most often the original owners are not there anymore though and find the origin is quite hard.  They went through some selection process already, you will not find a Brown Turkey anywhere.

How about pictures of ripe fruit and fruit cut in half... How does it taste?

That is a beautiful tree.  Good luck with your cuttings.

Igor, you have a good point, otherwise they would be long gone...not everybody appreciates the Fig tree, specially if it's not a good variety (to their opinion anyway).

Rich, I didn't have the heart to cut the darkest looking fig off of the tree, first of all they were watching with a smile, and then it didn't feel ripe in my hand so I didn't want to waste it...I will, however, go back and take more pics in a week or so...

Shailesh, thanks, how is your Lattarulla doing? I saw some pics of the new growth buds, it's a great sign :)

Schaplin, thanks, I will do my best to help the cuttings grow, so I can share. They gave me 2 good branches, 9-10 inches each.

Wow the figs look really nice. Good luck with your cuttings

Norhayati

thank you Norhayati :)

Rich per your request ;)

We were at the Muscle Beach again today and I decided to pay a visit to the Mother tree and snap few pictorial updates and have a talk with the one of the owners.
According to the present owners, this tree was originally planted by an Italian couple in late 70's and in 1981, when this couple moved out, it was transplanted (only not more than 20 feet away) to the space in the garden where it is now.
So the tree is about 35 years old.
It produces Brebas (which you have seen already) and main crop (we still have to see, in near future I hope).
ok, pictures.

I wish you guys could smell and taste this miracle.  Although , to my taste bud opinion, it didn't pass above 8 on scale of 10 for the sweetness,,given the right amount of ripening time it could easily be a 9er if not more...
The aroma of freshness coupled with the strong presence of figgie characteristics with ever slightly hint of blackberry got me salivating before the first bite.
The dark pinkish-purple skin was soft and juicy to the bite but less sweet than I expected. (maybe a 4-5 on scale of ten for sweetness)

and, this is what I brought home with me. Wasn't 100% ripe like the one I squeezed open on the premises but still was sweet and a bit firm.

Oh my goodness.  They look so good.  What a great find.

Looks good for sure!

Great find, Aaron!  A winner for sure.  So quit holding out, how did it taste?  Have you a clue to what type fig it is?  Now all you gotta do is propagate and share ;)

Nate

what a great find! looks so yummy.

I had started 5 cuttings from the first visit and this time I was given another branch which gave me all those pieces in the picture, I would say another s for sure. I don't have much hope for the greens but will try.
So I'll be rooting at least 8 cuttings. So, soon , there will be enough cuttings to go out to many curious figures  out there :)

@Nate, I updated my notes regarding the taste, in between last pictures. Thanks for the comment :)

Looks fantastic Aaron ! I love the color and shape . Good luck with all your cuttings. Happy to hear it ranked that high in taste even though it could have been a bit riper . Even happier to hear that there will be sharing of cuttings when available !!
Wonder if the green cuttings would do better in water?

Grasa, it is a good fig, I'm so happy to have found it :)

Pattee I have never dealt with green cuttings butI took your idea and threw them in a jar with water, lets see what happens.

Shailesh, as long as the cuttings have a hardwood ends, I can make them grow... been ok with that so far.

A great find, Aaron. Bravo for you!

It could be a Melanzana Calabreze in its breba fruit stage - it is the right color and it does look like a small eggplant!  Joe  (Italian: melanzana = eggplant)
