Aaron: Congratulations on your great find. Thanks for sharing.

Best,
Tam

A great find indeed. I found a tree loaded with alongated figs like yours. I went back to try talking with the owner and found the tree was gone with stump and all. I almost cried. It was a beautiful tree. I never learned what that fig was or if it even ripe for us here in the NW> You are so lucky to have that California weather...

@Joe , I hope it is MC, I always wanted to have one... "donpaid" was also suggesting the resemblance.

Tam, Grasa thanks for wonderful comments. Too bad you never got the chance to find out more about the one in Seattle Grasa. Maybe we'll find out together if it can do well there ;)

Good luck with them Aaron. Keep my fingers crossed for ya!

Grasa that is sooo disheartening..

Grasa, there should be shoots coming up soon.   :)

Aaron, maybe they'll want help pruning it in the winter?

Also, Aaron, check this post

Rumor has it the green cuttings root well this way.

huh, sounds good... I thought green cuttings wouldn't be promising. But makes sense, they even should root faster. I think the key is to keep them covered.

All the packages are out already for Monday delivery.

Thanks everybody for adopting this unique find :)

I am singing... "Do You See What I See..."  :)

Has anybody else noticed progress on their cuttings yet?

I just had a nice chat with one of the owners of the mother tree...He invited us to visit Venice Beach again and make a stop at their place for a visit... in the conversation he mentioned that the main crop is starting to show some color. I asked about the shapes , weather they were as elongated as the brebas.
To my surprise he said they weren't, they were more rounder shaped compared to the brebas. I am very curious , now, to go and check and document with pictures.
One of these days...

Nice! I am curious what you say about the taste.
I hope to get a cutting some day too, I was late to the game.

Of course you will get cutting my friend ;)
The owner is expecting me to prune the tree when the time is right.

Hi,
This is a cool tree I wish I had in my yard - Good find!
I'm wondering if this 'Unknown Venice Beach' is a Black Mission? The leaves look a lot like a Black Mission-variety and the fruit (elongated breba crop and round main crop) indicate that as well.

So first, when I look at this Melanzana Calabrese picture from ficuscarica.com, I think "That could be it". . .

But then check these known Black Mission breba pictures; the fruit & leaves are very similar to "Unknown Venice Beach". . .

Note the elongated figs maturing and the leaves. . .

A visit to the tree around this time of year to see the main crop could confirm what it is :)

Keep Growing,

Dave C, great point there.

Who knows... could be anything...but if you check the post #17 it shows the ripe open fig on the garden table... was very drk pinkish purple, as I recall. Also in post #1, check the long necks of the figs on the tree... they do look somehow unique in shape.
One more thing that was very consistent with this variety was that leaves were, 90% if not all, tri-lobed.

One of these days i'll take a trip to Venice Beach again with family...I'd have to complete this fig file by adding Main Crop into it.

If you ask me...Mission has much sweeter taste and to my liking. (California Mission is an awesome fig)
