Unknown Calderwood

After much interest in this fig i decided to make a new post with all info.

the original post is here

This is a delicious fig with 7/10 sweetness and 9/10 berry taste that is ripe in mid July. Has a closed tight eye, no seed crunch and medium skin softness.(these photos are from last year July 25th zone 8b) . Anyone have any idea??? The owner thought it was Kadota but he has two other typical Kadotas that do not look like this and they dont look like the Kadota that i have seen. The mother tree is huge!

So... the difference in color between last year's fruit and this year's fruit is substantial. The fruit this year has no doubt been conditioned by the unusual amount of rain that we have had and the less than record temperatures. The taste was just as good as last year as described in my original post(yum berry flavor!) The Kadota's in the photo are from the same yard.
The owner planted this tree around 40 years ago and it was supposed to be a Kadota. I spoke to the homeowners for a while the other day and they gave me their phone number and took mine and said i could come back this winter for pruning and cuttings....wahoo!

For those of you who messaged me originally for cuttings i have started a list.

  Fantastic!

Leaves look like Alma.  Maybe an abandoned sibling of Alma?

The inside looks really nice. This year's crop looks really nice too, the darker color is more attractive than the more yellow fotos at the top of your post.

Justin, there was some thought of this possibly being a Texas BA-1, I have this fig from Edible Lamdscaping, and though some leaves look like the UC, the newer leaves on mine are becoming more deeply lobed, and in addition, Michael from EL describes it as his sweetest fig.

Mike from Hanover, VA

Alma has decurrent to truncate leaf bases and this one is cordate to calcarate.

If it was planted 40 years ago that lines up with Alma's release in 1975. But if they had bred this fig also I think it would have been released also, cause it looks nice.

To all who have messaged me about this fig. I will be looking for trades for these when I acquire dormant cuttings in fall/winter. I will also gift these If I am able to get a lot.

I PM you Justin on the cuttings yesterday. Just making sure you got the PM as I didnt hear back from you. You were probably flooded with PMS though!

After much research i have come to the conclusion that my Unknown Calderwood fig is one of the following:

"Mega Celeste"
LSU Tiger
LSU Improved Celeste

As stated by Jon and others the taste is very different from Celeste, Jon describes it as Molasses and i described it as Caramel..but with a pervasive berry flavor that is non existent in Celeste.

Also distinct are the very large 1 lobed leaves.

This specimen has been in ground in Houston for at least 35-45 years.

That fig, regardless of the type, looks great. Tks for all the photos.

Are you located in Houston?

I'm in The Woodlands, the tree is in north Houston.

Nice, I'm just down the street in South Htown. I've seen some very big fig trees in the Woodlands. My brother in law lives there so we visit often. Nice area to live!

Yep, my neighbor to the left has a huge Celeste and my neighbor to the right has a black mission. I think a Texas meet up should be in the future!

Agreed! I do know there are several plant swaps and sorts in and around Houston. A fig swap would be cool too. Maybe your the guy to organize such a function?!?

Picture is of side by side cuttings of Unk. Calderwood and LSU Tiger. Without labels I can't tell them apart. My other Tiger and other 2 Calderwoods look the same.
