Unknown cuttings: "Hobart", "Schuyler", "Voiture #217"

I've pretty much tapped my resources on all cuttings of these varieties.  Sorry.

I agree that many of the leaves look like pictures of Brunswick I've seen. But then there are other leaves that make you second guess that.

BTW JD, the triplets are looking great.

@Bill, If I put Voiture in with your Haikel, I can't hardly tell the difference between the two. Very similar leaves. Not quite Brunswick-ish, leaves are too serrated and lobes get really short and fat compared to Brunswick.

I do like the leaves!!

My Joe Morle Paradiso ( Brunswick?) has more of a finger like thin-ness. Close but probably not.

Voiture #217. It was under-developed, under-colored, but sweet and not watery like several other figs that made it through two days of constant drizzling. There is a much larger fig almost ready and since the sun has reappeared, there is hope to taste it this season. Time will tell. Here it is

Interior looks tasty.  Exterior looks immature.  Looks like a dwarfed Brunswick.

lol. The fat lady is tuning up! btw, Unknown Morley dropped all their immature fruit. Pretty sure it is a Celeste now. I'll know for certain next season.

I'm keeping the faith!!

Jason,

Even after I used three layers of coffee filters as bird protection, still the little fockers were relentless; all three layers were pecked through. Dyam! Given the weather and its density, I'll use newspaper next but only on the chosen ones.

Here is the the good news: most other figs that have ripened during the recent cool weather have been tasteless, this Voiture was not. So along with Black Bethlehem, Camuna Small Black, Socorro Black, and Unknown Foxcroft, Voiture is on my good flavor during cool weather list...for this Fall in my zone. Next season, I will know more and hopefully it will be even better.

Voiture #217. Pecked and then picked on 22 October 2011.

I totally missed this update until today.  Thanks for reporting back, JD.  That last picture doesn't look a lot like Celeste, looks more like a Brunswick, but the "not water or spoiled after rain" quality is contrary to what I've heard nearly everyone say about Brunswick.  The mystery continues.  I should have fruit on my trees this year.  Still have a Schuyler for you as well...

JD that photo is gorgeous.  I think I have said that before about your photos, they make me drool.

Thanks saramc!

So who got to taste figs from this tree?  Are they early, do they hold up to rain?

yes, look three posts above yours.  JD tasted it in post #62.

Somehow I missed that there were two pages to this thread.  Thanks.  :)

Ok, I'm watching Voiture ripen off a ton of figs this year... It's definitely a Brunswick. Doesn't split with massive rain, though - we got two inches the other day and I have Sal C and Deleon splitting left or exploding left and right but Voiture is perfectly OK. Hmmm....

Pics to follow in about a week. I got about 5 days to go before we are fully ripe on two figs. They are characteristically lopsided and pear shaped.

I love this thread since the little tree I rescued is a Brunswick.  I'm potting up two other rooted cuttings today and crossing fingers they survive.  Probably no fruit till next year, but this thread helps me know a lot more about Brunswick!

Thanks!

Suzi

Jason,

This is a very informative thread. Glad to see you saved a few heirloom trees from being lost. What are the ID confirmation on the other two? Do not recall if there was a confirmed ID or not.

This trail is fascinating and I enjoy reading it. Have you returned to see if the tree came back to life?

Schuyler still hasn't fruited, and I'm one of the only people that has managed to root it off.  I'm almost convinced it will end up being a Celeste based on experience with other trees in the area.

Voiture is most definitely a Brunswick or Brunswick variant.  The mother tree is gone, dead, no more.

I am convinced that Hobart is Napolitana Branca, whatever that means.  Not sure what Napolitana Branca is a synonym for, but ... it seems like a 100% match to me.

Pics of "Voiture 217", fully sized and fully ripe.  I couldn't eat because it was rancid and crawling with fruit fly larvae.  The open eye on this one makes it prone to bugs and ... I doubt I'll ever get to taste one, the other ones that are about 3-4 days from ripe are teeming with fruit flies inside and out, and now the bees and yellowjackets are starting to swarm them.  Seems to be common with Brunswick here.

This tree has great leaves, but if I can't eat the fruit... it's gotta go to fig heaven!  Anyone near Atlanta want a 5' tall Brunswick or two?

Hi Jason,

Do you have a pic of the eye of this tree's unripened green fruit?

Was this tree grown in a pot?

An estimate of how many hours of sun per day?

Thanks, Barry

Jason,

How large is the root section and do these go dormant in Atlanta?
