Unknown fig

  • jtp

Well, I couldn't wait until the weekend, so I ran out to Carolina Beach (NC) tonight and got some cuttings from that unknown fig tree I saw. I found a rooted sucker and got about 10 or so cuttings to try and root. The tree is covered in big unripe fruit, so I'll go back in a couple of weeks to check them out. Hopefully, it can then be determined what type it might be.

Way to go, John!!

Keep those clippers handy.  :)

The unknowns I 'clipped' the other day also have green fruits, but 'mine' probably will take much longer to ripen. I'm hoping mine will be a mission type. I would like that. :)

It was a good score. I had to crawl through some poison ivy to get the sucker, but I don't get the rash. Years of rolling around in the brush as a kid, I must have developed some immunity.

Adding to my good evening, I saw a second and third tree on the way home and snipped a couple of cuttings from one of them. No idea what variety any of these will be. They might all be Celeste for all I know. Even if they are not more exotic, I am happy.

Looking through some older posts. Please update us if possible. My family vacation is to Carolina Beach and there is a tree at Havanah's Resturaunt that has large green fruit with red flesh - maybe the same one you spotted?. Never been a big fan of that tree but if there are some other good trees in public areas I wouldn't mind taking a detour next year.

After the initial post, I realized it was actually in what is considered the adjacent village, Kure Beach. They kind of blur into one another on the island.

This tree is located next to a vacation rental property and has large, flattish, dark red figs. I got some cuttings out to some folks on here recently. I could only collect really when the tourists were not present, so before May and after October. Otherwise, the place is crawling with people who may question the guy clipping away at the fig tree.

I don't have the precise address at the moment (it never mattered before). It's kind of like your gym locker; you don't know the number, just where it is. If I get out there again, I'll try to get that info for you.

John,
That Kure Beach cutting you sent me is rooted, and in a 32oz. deli cup, ready for the next stage of development.  Thanks.

I'll be there in tourist season so don't worry about it. I'll be sure to keep my eyes open next year. Sounds like there are a lot of fig trees around.

If you go off the main roadway especially, there are many older trees on all of the islands. Figs love this coastal weather.

Vince, glad it is doing well for you. I have very little information on the tree, but I know it is hardy, productive and is not BT.

Both my Kure Beach cuttings have rooted and are leafing out!  I hope you can somehow get a picture of a ripe fig and a mature leaf, so the experts here can ID it!

This is how so many varieties come up!  Mine will forever and always be "Kure Beach!"  .....unless you change it :-))

I believe I posted leaves at some point, no fruit though. Most leaves were trilobed. If it helps, it looks like an LSU Gold, only it is red, almost maroon. Big and kind of flattened.

Wow John, I can't wait 'til that baby starts producing those beautiful "maroon" figs.  Yipeee !!
