Unknown - Leaf Shape (Martin)

Martin,

A while back when I posted some pics of your unknown, you mentioned that the leaf shape was a little different than the "mother" plant. I took a few pics today of later, more mature leaves. Do these resemble yours more closely? I also included a pic of a heart-shaped leaf with no lobes on one of these plants.

Hi Steve,
the first leave you show is more close , the middle round leaf is a young leaf, and the last leaf i see but not as much anymore if that all makes sense to you.
As you plant matures more it should look more similar to mother tree leaves i think its still a little young perhaps. Here is some pictures of the mother tree not sure if i posted these or you saw them.

I will take some more pictures this season and post them here in this thread.
As of now its the first of my trees to actually have small leaves coming out, the others are behind. First to awaken and last to ripen and leave many figs on tree before its just to cold at end of season.
Im curious how it will ripen for you in the coming years.

Here is a young seedling from the parent tree

Martin,

Thanks for the pics. The variations in leaf shape do make sense. The heart-shaped one was very low on the tree (early) and the others are higher (later). As expected, the leaf shape is changing as the plant is maturing and taking on more of the expected leaf shape like yours. It is its first season and I was curious to see how different they still were. We'll compare again later in the season when there is more growth on my tree. I'm sure by next season, it will look more like yours. It's interesting to track these changes. I'd also be curious to see how your first leaves of the season compare to ones later in the season (take some pics so we can compare).

Steve,
I will take pictures to compare. Its fun for me.
I was out this morning with the dogs and i looked at trees, when leaves come out on the fig trees its enjoyable for me as there really nice looking on all the fig trees when there so small.
Im curious to see from Texas to Canada to Jersey down to the South if there will be any differences in plant.

Nothing to report from me about the Martin's unknown other that it froze to the ground during the winter, it is starting to grow now!

Cecil,
sorry to hear that about plant, if for some reason something happens let me know.  ; )
On another note it will be 53 today it 45 now i was wondering why i heard the furnace kick on. My larger potted trees have been out on patio since last week , grow light ones are in garage as there not  ready for 40s at night  its 56 in garage.

Thanks Martin,

But my little Martins looks like it is going to be just fine, I had it covered with a plastic tub during a cold night and some kind of critter?? who knows what uncovered it and it was on its own that night, but it is growing shoots & leafs now.

And it looks like I haven't forgot how to trap Fig killing Gophers.......got my first one of 09 just while ago.It was headed for my little Smith tree........WRONG.:-)

Martin,

Congratulations, you are a Grandpa! Below is the first fig bud on the Unknowns I rooted from you over the winter. I also attached a pick of figs growing on my Armenian also rooted this winter. I think I may have a few popping out on the Atreano, Ventura and Smith (all rooted over the winter) but it's a little early to tell yet on these. I'm pleasantly surprised to get any figs this season from the new plants. I don't know how good they will be if they ripen, but it's exciting anyway.

The parent is almost leafed out but no figs yet i really wacked it good last season.
Sounds like your trees are doing well and your on your way to a fig filled season !
Hope they all taste well for you this season.

You know what keeps me going with figs in Zone 5 with no frustration at all (yet) is the pictures of your potted figs like you posted above with yummy fruits for your Zone 5; and of of course the other reason is no worry of pollination or bud/bloom kill by our winter due to dormant storage of the potted figs in a cold store.

Ottwan,
i understand, what brought me to realize they can grow here with success was my grandma growing one inground in Chicago for many many years.
Each year my uncles would spend the day carfully burying it back into the ground what looked like a grave afterwards .
So many years later now i grow but in containers as its easier for me.
