Great Photography work, Great Looking Figs. We need to network together, you send figs my way and I will send some your way.....Will save these pics...Thanks !!!

This is the breba crop for the possible Carini unknown that i have named Sunbird Unknown. This tree is absolutely loaded and is the first to ripen here in Houston, Tx ...weeks before Celeste is ripe(which is usually first).

Some of the breba in the photos were picked a bit early(damn birds) so they still have a green hue. The breba is more oblong than the main crop fig and larger.
*Also, this cultivar roots faster than any other variety i have ever tried...it will be covered in 1-2" roots in 4 to 5 days if the humidity is at least 60%.

As mentioned previously, the taste is 8/10.. very sweet, soft nearly non existent skin, no berry taste, eye has remained closed despite the huge amount of rain we have had lately. Fully ripe it has a complex taste that i can only describe as carmel/vanilla

Very nice photos and description of what seems to be a wonderful fig, Justin. Has me hoping that cuttings might be available at some point. Have you made contact with the elderly lady?

You should slip a note under her door....tell her you'd like to take cuttings, maybe give het your phone#....see what she does.

I agree! Let her know your agenda isnt a bad one and try to get some dialogue going. Without getting the cops called on you of course lol! You never know when an old lady might get freaked out! Good luck.. A cutting of this would be nice:D

How far north of Houston btw? Like the Woodlands or much further. I couldnt make a special trip but if I were in the neighborhood I'd definitely stop and snap some pics.

I have left a note describing that i am a neighbor and collector of figs...to no avail though. I have spoken with her neighbor on several occasions and he says he rarely sees her either and that she is sort of a hermit type. I may go back with my fiance to see if maybe she will come to the door if i am accompanied by a woman. We shall see...

cuttings will be available in the near future..i will keep everyone posted.
This tree is too marvelous a variety to not spread to the fig community!

Nice work Justin. That's a beautiful looking fig.
Great to hear your intentions of collecting and preserving fig varieties and sharing cuttings with the community. That's what the forum's all about!!!

Justin,

It looks very similar to unknown Carini, but Carini has red flesh.  Your appears to have an amber color.  Otherwise, very similar looking fig.  I hope you get to chat with the neighbor!

Justin its nice to meet you PLEASE keep me on the list for some cuttings that sounds like a very tasty fig caramel/vanilla oh man im in just tell me how much and how to pay you.
Good luck talking with the lady ive been in that situation before dont give up.
PS if your getting figs from the tree why not just cut a few long branches off ? and make a few bunches of cuttings.

Hi palazzophoto,
Nice harvest of beautiful figs !

Looks like a great fig. However, this kind of bugs me. I totally agree with regard to trying a note. It is common courtesy to ask before taking.

I know we have all taken cuttings and fruit from found trees. I certainly have. Abandoned or vacant properties are far different than one with a resident. I always exhaust available methods of contact before simply harvesting. You know she is in there. Maybe ask a neighbor with whom she is familiar to act as a go-between for an introduction.

Consider this older lady's potential perspective. She does not know you and is likely watching this unknown person harvesting her figs from her yard. You might be scaring the hell out of her. And she may have intended to eat those figs herself. If so, it is theft without permission.

I know you have no bad intent. I would just urge you to continue to try to meet her before helping yourself to the cuttings everyone is so excited to acquire.

JTP, i totally agree with you on this matter but I know she does not pick them because i have watched them go to the birds for the last two summers. The tree is hanging over onto the street so i have helped myself to some figs and a few cuttings, the tree is so full the amount i picked is not even noticeable.  I do feel bad, with regards to not getting permission and I am going to make every attempt to make contact with her to learn about the tree and get permission for fruit and cuttings. That is why i am not offering any cuttings yet. Im sure i will make contact with her this summer.

I wish you the best of luck, those sound amazing! I normally prefer my figs to have a berry taste, but caramel/vanilla sounds too good to be true. If you are able to get them, you know you'll need to truckload of cuttings with how good your description sounds!

I know what it is like to try to make contact with someone with figs, and not get a response. There is a neglected property near me that was a business at some point.. It is overgrown with weeds and has 5 different fig trees. I have knocked and left notes, but no response. No one picks or cares for these trees as far as I have seen. They might be common varieties, but I'd like to talk with the person to find out.

This fig you are showing sounds fantastic, I would like to grow and eat a fig with that flavor profile. I hope you can get permission to take cuttings, but older reclusive people might be hard to reach. I agree though, find some way to make it happen! If they become available, please put me on your list, hopefully I have a good trade you want, or money.

Good luck with making a new friend. Hopefully, she'll be able to give you a great backstory on this variety. Keep us posted!

Another option might be to ask a neighbor if there are any relatives to start the discussion with.

Or if the neighbor know she is of a particular ethnic origin, put a note on door or mail her a letter in that language.  Sometimes older people who immigrated long ago and who have some dementia revert to their native language.

Good luck!
