I bought five trees over the summer to quench my fig addiction. The guy that sold them to me didn't seem too sure of the varieties and honestly I didn't care at the moment, I just wanted FIGS!!!! The person I bought them from said they were Marseilles, Pingo De Mel, Celeste, Portugal Dwarf and Mission.  I do not know that these are the varieties and hope to I.D. the figs with some help from the forum members during next season. I will be pruning the trees and figure I can take about 15 cuttings from each tree. three cuttings from each tree per person comes out to five packs of 15 total cuttings. If anyone is interested $10 gets you one of these packs shipped in the small flat rate boxes. first 5 to send $10 to joseney21@hotmail.com and post on this thread get a pack....

edit: it is the one at 3 o'clock right?

hoosier a trade would be great, the only problem is aside from the fact that I wouldn't take the guys word for what was what I don't know which tree is which...I have marked them 1-5 until I can get somewhat of an I.D. if you're still interested let me know...

It looks like the guy who sold them knows his figs to me. Starting from the top right: Mission, Dwarf Portugal, Celeste, Marseilles White (Italian Honey), Pingo de Mel. I don't have experience with all of them but that is close anyway. I am willing to bet the Dwarf Portugal is a Mt. Etna fig, it looks very much like Sal's. It would be easy to tell when it leafs out in the spring. If you are not sure which is which now we can wait till summer.

Jake, Mark and Grasa, I will be cutting and sending out your cuttings tomorrow when I get home from work (assuming I don't get mandated or an extremely late call, never know how 911 will behave) if not by tomorrow then definitely Tuesday.

Brent, PM your address and what you have/want to trade, I will send you cuttings from the five.

I think that is all for now folks, I have received PMs and all cuttings are spoken for. I'll update here if things change.

Thanks!!

Jose

Shipped.....

but after shipping I have a new found respect for the forum members who do this on a regular basis or others that ship things regularly...I spent over on hour last night gathering cuttings in my garage while listening to coyotes laugh at me, I think they were in my yard. I thought I was going to have to fight a few...I was pretty tired after a long day's work and got to bed pretty late after winding down. I'm usually pretty sleepy if I don't get good sleep the night before but packaging the cuttings and prepping them for shipping kept me up (surprisingly). work kept getting in the way but eventually I finally managed to get them shipped....good luck rooting, hope you guys enjoy these.

BTW, please let me know if you have any problems...

P.S. I forgot to pack paper towels so I wrapped the cuttings in wet gauze and napkins...

You and me both.  I got my my cuttings off early this afternoon.  While it was gratifying to be able to give something back...this is not something I would want to do a lot....

Thank you for the welcome! Sorry for the half rate intro, but I got a little excited and didn't want to miss out as these are a couple of the figs I've been wanting ;)  I was trying to hurry up and post between trying to make dinner and feed the crying baby. I am in the Portland, Oregon area.  I think that we are in zone 8?  We have an edible landscape and have included figs for a few years now.  I have the Desert King, Peter's Honey and the Violette du Bordeaux.
Now off to finish up with the kids and send them to bed.  Thanks for all the great info here!

Thank you so much!  I'm so excited. I was looking at your previous post and saw your beautiful trees.  I felt your excitement in your sharing the news and thought it looked like your family enjoys them as much as my family and I do.  Then I was even more excited when I saw this thread.  I didn't even finish reading the thread because I was worried I would miss out on the list while I was reading, lol. Thank you so much for including me on the list and for taking the time to offer and mail your cuttings, especially around your busy work schedule.  I appreciate it and look forward to receiving them.

to all those who received tracking numbers, they may not have been tracking numbers. I tried entering them into usps after being alerted by a member that his number didn't work, sure enough they didn't work....It was the only number I got that looked like a tracking number....all had expected delivery dates of 12/06, one was 12/05

Sorry Jim, maybe next time. I am trying to root a bunch of cuttings I took before starting this thread, if those work out maybe you'll get more than cuttings. Fingers crossed....I took a look at some of the cuttings and they have little nubs where I'm assuming roots will start to grow.

the last pic is a different look at 4

thanks to Lebmark for asking me again for an ID... I hadn't thought of comparing the old pics (with figs, leaves and trunks) to the new pics of just trunks and branches. I'm glad I have a better Idea of what they are now.

Looks like it is going to be a busy weekend... I will send a PM to those who have already requested cuttings, if anyone else is interested post on this thread or send me a pm. I don't think there will be enough of the number two to go around (I pruned as much as i could). any money left over from the shipping costs will be donated to F4F foundation.

If the names match the numbers and the varieties are correct, then I would say yes...lol. I don't want to say yes 100% until the growing season kicks in and i get confirmation with fig and leaf pics.

How is the rooting going Grasa? the grafted cutting you sent is leafing out, as are most of the others. do you think it is time to take the rubber bands off or can i leave them on? I have the cuttings in a perlite/vermiculite/potting soil mixture so I can't see root progress...I'm pretty sure they are there though, everything looks healthy

Jose, I would not remove tthe bands yet.  Graft joints are very fragile and I am a novice ( many experienced members told me I did not do it proper)  Band helps keep the moist they have until they grow, don't want to run the chance!  I already planted in the larger pots here and did not remove the band, yet.

My cuttings are doing excellent. Most of them in little pots as they had little roots! So far, they all survived and I have a few in refrigerator to attempt to graft on my large tree out there.  I have 6 pots in a salad plastic tub, I cover the lid at night and lean it against the heating vent - during the day, they are getting a tiny bit of day light...so far they are fine. thank you very much.

I was trying to do some looking and I'm a bit stumped. I'm wondering is the Dwarf Portugal (suspected #2) the same as the Black Portugal?  I can't seem to find anything to compare.
Thanks!

Sarah, those are the names the guy gave me when I bought them. He had a ton of figs and definitely new how to grow them, at least 100 (if not hundreds) of pots all over his property. he said he moves them all in for winter. I rented a Uhaul and it was a lot of back and forth driving that day to make it happen, when I finally got the trees it was late and I didn't want to take up any more of his time (it was his granddaughter's birthday. ... to keep from giving any of these figs the wrong name, lets continue to call them unknown for now...sorry

Understood. I can't wait till the little buggers leaf out and fruit so we can all figure out what they are.  Sort of like a surprise package.  Thanks for explaining for me.  So far I've gotten at least one of each to root up and some are leafing out. :)
Thanks again!
