Unwrapped trees on Long Island

I unwrapped three trees yesterday. All three had been wrapped in burlap, followed by insulation wrap, followed by a tarp, followed by a foot of straw at the base. Our winter was as brutal as everyone's. Results:

Golden Atreano - absolutely no damage at all. Last year, this tree was heavily damaged. Will wrap each year henceforth.

VDB - absolutely no damage. This was first year in ground.

Panachee - about six inches of damage on the tips. Otherwise, she got through. I was most concerned with this one and very pleased it survived relatively intact.

Other trees not protected over the winter:

Italian Red, Celeste and Negronne planted two feet from house facing south - no damage

Black Mission planted six feet from house facing east - no damage

Hardy Chicago planted next to fence, six feet from house facing east, my tastiest fig last year - no damag

That's awesome news Steve well done. Would have loved to see pics.
Now let's get this weather warmed up so we can start growing some figs.

This is good information Steve Thanks. A couple of those that you have I would like to put in the ground as well.

Here is the damage on the Panachee.

SWEET,
I am surprised by the lack of damage to the unprotected trees.
Gives me hope!

Here is a better Panachee damage pic

There is some damage but I'd say all in all not too bad at all. Nice tree's.

Sorry for the multiple posts. This is the Golden Atreano. It made it through the winter. I hope it survives my boys playing lacrosse in the yard.

Greg

I think the proximity to the house really helped the unwrapped trees. Usually within hours of the snowfalls, the snow melted at base of house. The house heat radiating into soil clearly helps. Also the tree types are a bit more cold Hardy tolerant. I must say, seeing that Panachee in its current condition has given me great hope for less cold tolerant types.

A Steve where neighbors ?

Hey Anthony,

Yes we are. If you are ever out by me, please don't hesitate to drop a message and stop by. Forum members are family.

Steve,
Great news.  I am also from LI and have 2 in ground unknows (BT probably) that were left uncovered this winter.  They are at least 20 years old and have never been covered but this was a bad winter.  I was out inspecting them this morning and they don't look too bad but I have my fingers crossed anyway.  I took some cuttings off them the day before the first blast of real frigid weather as a back-up.

Bill where in nassau ?

Good job Steve.  Hopefully you have a long productive growing season to make up for the winter.

Bill/Anthony

If you are nearby I should have extra 2year old Green Venturas and Panachee's. Just need them to break dormancy before I officially offer them out.

Steve

What were the lowest temps and how long did it hold at those temps?

Good for you now c'mon spring weather.

Calvin

Unfortunately, I do not know where to find that info. My Zip Code is 11801 in case that helps. I Recall hearing February was on average about 10 degrees colder than usual., so low twenties and teens. With wind chills, many days were around zero. We were within a couple of inches of setting a new snow fall record also.

Steve

Steve I would love to take you up on your offer for the Panachee.
All my cuttings didn't make it.
Just let me know what I owe you.

Anthony

If you have any cuttings of types I don't have, I would gladly accept them. If not, a thank you will more than suffice.

Steve

BTW Long Island is great place to live IMHO. Just say'n

New Jersey ain't too shabby. I have a sister in law in East Brunswick, horse country and an uncle in Franklin Lakes. North Jersey is like being upstate NY. No lights on the streets, lots of green, deer and bear, etc...

yeah.. LI is a great place. i do miss nyc.. only if i was still in my 20s.

Pete - with your hiking, weekend beverage updates, and your mentioning of your svelte 150 lb figure makes you seem twenty compared to me
