up pot/repot.

i know up potting the trees that are actively growing shouldn't be any issue during any time of the yr. but repot will cause a lot much stress.

i need to move one of my tree soon. it has rather thick root size of my finger circling the 3 gal pot. i need to dig in and cut that rot off and up pot to much larger container.

i was thinking i'll wait till the end of the yr and do root pruning and then up pot to larger container. but not sure if i should wait.

since i need to dig into root ball, i'm not sure if it will be simple up pot. it would stress the tree a bit. what would be the best approach? i know when i did similar thing 3 yrs ago, the trees were sitting in shade for a month before they would take the sun again.

Hi Bullet08,
If you up-size the pot, then I wouldn't touch the roots.
I never touch the roots of a figtree.
Or - depending of the actual size of the pot- you could wait until the tree goes dormant to do the operation.
The problem if you do it now is that you could mess up the season for that tree .

When up potting during growth only cut circling roots so they don't choke the tree later, when I say circling I mean more than half way around the root ball, you shouldn't have too many like this unless it has needed to be root pruned or up potted very badly.

super thrive? last time i bare rooted and it set back my trees a month. i know i have to get rid of that thick root some how...

My opinion is dont mess with roots when leaves are on. If root bound up pot now, root prune when dormant. Otherwise leave as is until dormant.

IMHO I would not cut the large root when up potting. If you have pulled it out of the pot already I would just put it in a larger one, water it and leave it in the shade for a week.

I don't know if you remember my lsu tiger last fall. I had posted some picks when I put it in ground from a 5 gal sip. It had a solid wall of roots all around the bottom. You guys (and I think you specifically) told me I needed to cut those roots. So I dig it up and sliced thorough the wall in several places and loosened it up as best I could and replanted it. It continued to ripen a few more figs, one even burst open. It has now woken up after the winter and doing fine.

if it wasn't CdDN, i would take care of it now. but been waiting on the fig off this tree for last 3 yrs. i wan't going to touch it till the winter when i would have done the root prune and put into new pot. but wind blew and the tree tipped over. it's top heavy. when i picked it up, i thought i would check the root. it came out easy enough, not root bound. but there is this big root that's circling the pot. about finger thick.

i think when i got home today, i'll pull it out again and just prune that root off.

In you post you mentioned rot, was that just a typo? If not I would think it important to get rid of any rot asap....

typo. the tree is 3 yrs old and growing well.
