I don't think you're doing it too early. I think you're doing it when the fig tells you to! 
The earliest one I had show roots was 10-12 days (can't remember exactly) but my reaction was "holy crap that's fast!"... I thought I had more time ;)

I have noticed on many of the root riot pix and videos that the roots seem very thick, irm and sturdy, compared to roots that pop in the baggie with sphagnum method. I'm assuming that you have done both methods, do you think these riots are stronger, and less fragile?

Vince, I think the timing was perfect for potting up. I had my first one a few days ago and it only had visible roots above the
Root Riot cube. I think that was due to the fact that I scored it and part of the scoring was above the cube.

Mark B. - I have used the sphagnum moss method before root riot, and found the roots to be very 
             delicate and easy to break off from the cutting...with the root riot system the roots are
             supported by the cube itself, and are less likely to break off.

Mike  -   Thanks for the info on your root riot experience...if this method works all the way through to
            a stable, viable tree, then I will not go back to other methods...with root riot there's only two
            steps:  1.Into the root riot cube...2.up pot to 1gal....no more sphagnum moss or deli cups. :)

Vince I think you did it at the best time. As I've noted on mine, if you allow them to stay much longer the roots start to turn brown but if move up to a cup, the roots that hit the cup sides are the same strong white roots as you have shown. Another plus, or at least I think so, is that when transplanted into a cup or pot, the root ball is at the top near the surface. The young transplant will not suffer from roots being in overly wet soil if it is over watered a little thus preventing rot.

Gene...those Root Riot cuttings look great...real strong & healthy root systems...the more feed back I get on this RR set up,the more advantages I see...thank you for sharing your observations, and have a great growing season.

Vince, what is the purpose of grow lights when cuttings are initially inserted into the root riot cubes? Heat?

Frank(FMD)...the T-5 lights do generate a certain amount of heat, but over and above that, I just think that all living things respond to sunlight, whether natural or artificial...and once the cuttings break bud and start leafing out, the whole photosynthesis process kicks into gear...they are under the lights from day 1.

Anybody still use this and able to share success/failures?

I used to use them and got great results with initial rooting, the problem came when up-potting... The sponge holds on and absorbs alot of water so I would lose most due to rot. If you try peeling the sponge off you run the risk of breaking roots... I stay away from these now...

Yes, you have to be really careful after you up-pot not to water too much.  I found that cuttings were nearly 100% successful at the point of up-potting and then I lost about 1/3.  There is a comment upthread about not transplanting the cube very deep and maybe that would help.
