Update on The Godfather Fig Tree

Hi All,

To all my friends growing The Godfather fig I finally have some very promising news.

(To read my original post:
http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/the-fig-tree-from-the-godfather-movie-7801937?pid=1297856211)

This is now the second year I am growing him and I have finally begun eating some figs.

My first surprise is how big he is. A few of them were between 60-80 grams of beauty. I wasn't expect much as far as flavor goes as it is the first year bearing edible fruit. After eating 7 of these, I must say, when picked and ripened correctly, this is one really delicious fig. Each one has been getting better and better, with a really nice sweetness and just the right amount of crunch. Needless to say, after discovering this gem 2 years ago and replanting the mother tree, heavily trimming it and then  and distributing the cuttings to many of you, I couldn't be happier.

This has been a real fun project for me, but one of the real mysteries still exists. I still don't know what variety it is, there  are some possibilities, but nothing I can really honestly surmise. As far as that mystery goes, I really don't care anymore.

To me it will always be The Godfather, and that's good enough for me.
I've waited a long time to post these picture

To all of you growing him, you are in for a real pleasant surprise.

This is wonderful news. Congratulations!
Thanks again for sharing what turned out to be a winner with a unique story that hopefully many will enjoy for many years.

Can't wait to see some of those on the cutting you sent me in January. The Brooklyn Dark
that you included already has a few figs on it.

Beautiful fig Coop! Is yours in ground or potted? Just wondering if mine should be on my list to go in ground next spring or not. Our grow zones are not too far apart. Mine has put on some tremendous growth since I received it early this year as a small rooted cutting. It's in a 10 gal now

Hi Wendy
I grow mine in pots. I have in ground trees also, but haven't introduced The Godfather to the ground yet.

Thanks coop I have it too. I have been waiting to see a ripe fig. My guess was MSVS black. I was wrong but very happily surprised.

I was looking at ours in front of our house yesterday and was wondering if anybody has gotten figs. Great news. Mine has grown fantastic in the last year but no figs. Hopefully next year. My daughter loves figs and I can't wait for her to try one from "her" tree.

Thank you again Coop!

Hey Coop, you are a very giving person, thanks so much for the cuttings you sent us. Now I can look forward to enjoy them also! : )

Hi Coop. I picked my first Godfather fig the other day. It had a very nice taste and I was very happy with it. I am growing it in container too. Thank you for sharing the Godfather (And Dominick too).

Thanks for the update, Coop, and for the cuttings you sent me.  I successfully rooted 2 Godfather figs and 2 Unk Brooklyn Dark figs (bonus cuttings you sent.)  I have planted one each on our property near Lanexa, VA and they are doing well so far.  The other two are still in pots and, if the in-ground figs survive the winter, I will give them to family or friends.

It is nice to hear that the Godfather fig not only has a compelling story, but is an excellent fig as well.  I look forward to tasting it!  Any update on the Brooklyn Dark fig?

I just picked another Godfather and it tastes even better than the one I had a few days ago. More are ripening, I just have to get them before the birds do.
