Uppotting- next pot size

Quick question on pot size. I have a couple fig trees that are ready to be up potted out of their current one gallon pots. Was at the store today trying to decide if I should go to a #3, # 5 or jump straight to a #7. Is there any reason not to skip straight to the 7? Is it bad because I can't prune the roots in between pot transitions?

chrome360,

I can only tell you what I've done and plan to do.  I go from 1 to 3 gallon nursery pots.  I plan to go from 3 gal nursery pots to a 5 gal bucket (or maybe a 6.5 gal SWC).

I went from 1 gal to 7 gal this year.  There weren't any problems I could attribute to that.

As long as your mix doesn't hold too much water you'll be ok.

most of mine went to 3 gal from 1. mainly due to lack of space. few i went straight to 10 gal. there shouldn't be any issue. make sure the soil mix drains well like jason said.

I tried doing both 1 to 3 gallon and 1 to 7 gallon this year, they all did about equally well but the ones that were placed in 3 gallons ended up having to be potted up to 7 gallons a short time later so I think in the future I will skip the 3 gallon stage

Plus a small plant in a large container is very drought resistant  :)
