USDA / UC Davis Fig Mosaic Virus Study

Thank you Jon! At last any light in the confused FMV tunnel!
The research objectives for next year are very interesting too. We will have more evidences and less conjectures (too many so far!).

It said they started the study in the summer of 2005.  Did they get more funding and continue?

Is there any update for 2009 and beyond?

I read an eye-opener of a message from a regular/veteran member about FMV to UCD, which led me to research the topic tonight (insomnia is a pain!).

I found the post that Marty recently bumped with Jon's Q&A on UCD FMV, but all other information seems to be years old.

Between JR's alleged RKN problem and UCD's alleged FMV problems, I'm left to wonder...is anything really safe?  How does a newbie protect his/her self?

Also, what else does a newbie need to look out for?   Why is there no 'newbie friendly' FAQ out there?

Would it be advisable to put a newbie thread (stuck to the top of the forum) with these FAQ items, maybe a list of known "bad" sellers, known "good" sellers (ebay, www, etc), known concerns...you get the drift.  I found three or four good eBay sellers (johnsvmf, treesofjoy, Figsandstuff although I can't find their ebay store) listed, and I found here or at GW a list of veterans that are always trustworthy, but have since lost it.

I know I would benefit from a thread something like that.  The reality is, I could research all day - which...I'm trying to read back through years of posts here, but it's going to take many weeks at this rate to parse the years of info, then months to research every item of interest.  Everyday I find some new danger I'd never heard of before...and they are in no central location.  And it is never clear if/when the problem is "resolved" or "debunked" or "confirmed", so ... it's tough to be a newer fig nut!

Not complaining, just saying... from a newbie's perspective.

Thanks for postig that file Jon.
Jason here is something on FmV i posted in past but im not expert just a newbie with my observations of my plants with some pictures.

New plant received from Edible Landscape is clearly infected. I don't believe that I have received a plant from any commercial source that was not infected.

I purchased 6 plants from Edible Landscapes in 2008.  5 were clearly infected.  The 6th was Hardy Chicago which is apparently FMV resistant anyway.

C.J.

isn't 99% of any breeding program about finding those varieties and animals that are immune to diseases common in our area,.

I think our jobs as producers of any living thing is providing the plants and animals with all nutrients and enzymes/food they may ever need.it can only help them. then to cull those who need to much extreme special attention in our areas.
oh this is nannanae I tried months ago to get on this site and never could.. I found a way the other day .

My 2002  [mature] EL, 5 figs seem to be FMV free.  Maybe
they just have out-grown it? At that time I was still naive
and had not ever heard of FMV (or of the worse RKN factor
for that matter; got it from 3 other vendors; NOT EL or UCD).
Last fall, I  got a St. Anthony (EL) which is doing fine.
However, I did buy other figs from many other multiple vendors
that showed mild/strong signs of FMV. In particular; my
Tashkent grew its tip to a 360 degree loop, almost into
a self-knot!

In general I believe that all figs have this virus, some specimens
do not show it at all, but some more than other do suffer from it,
specially during periods of stress, e.g., rooting.

One problem with UCD, as mentioned earlier by another
member,  was/is that in order to "jump-the-gun" for a
quicker evaluation of newer figs, grafting on already known
(FMV) infected host was/is done/used?  If that was/is the case, it is a
sure very bad way to go....

Anybody with some influnce on UCD  (Jon?) , pl. verify and advise them.

One particular UCD fig that suffers veeery severely from FMV is the Ischia Black.
