USDA / UC Davis pix No.3

The goal of this trip was to photograph as many of the cultivars as possible. Some were earlier season figs, and no longer available, and some later season figs, not yet ripe. However, the vast majority were available. Unless otherwise noted, these were of acceptable flavor, worth growing, but not necessarily exceptional.

VERTE

Very nice flavor. This is a must have.

ADRIATIC

Fabulous flavor, definite keeper. However, the collection tree is in serious decline, and not suitable for for distributing scion from. It is currently being repropagated, but scion will not be available for a few years.

CALVERT

Another very nice flavored selection, which everyone should have.

Is the Verte the same fig as the "Battaglia Strawberry Verte" I hear people rave about? And how might the Verte compare to a Desert King tastewise?

That last Calvert picture is really quite beautiful.

I doubt they are the same. The Verte was a smaller fig. There was a richness to the flavor, I want to say spiciness, but that conveys the wrong idea, which isn't there in Desert King, though that is a wonderful fig.

Calvert was about the same size, with a nice, though lesser flavor. I may get a couple from my own tree, yet this season.

That explains why all people that requested it in 2006, were denied from having it!
I do have a 2005 specimen, and to my best recollection, had given my spares to
Herman (says it tastess excellent) and KK (says it splits badly).  As for me,
I did harvest my first one a week+ ago, but seemed too weird to commend about.

Sooo, who ever has it (DFIC0032), for better or worse, HOLD on to it for now!
I did two successful air-layerings, but they are spoken for.

There is also a similar (FVM free- version; from MM/TX) that I would like to have...

George (NJ).

Jon --any idea how this 3 good tasting variants would be against Battalagia Green and your Peter's Strawberry. I have B.Green & the 2 others but no Peter Strawberry yet. Would sure like to complete my collection with  PS if you have one to spare. Hopefully Adriatic would be added to my collection soon.

My Battaglia has not fruited yet - quite slow growing - so can't say. BG had another more common synonym, when it was sold by Paradise, but can't find my files about it, right now.

No PS this year - did not grow much last season (weird weather).
