Hello Axel!

Welcome among us, it's always nice to see folks from Europe. I'm also from Europe, I'm from Hungary. The first thing what I would advice you that don't care with the temperatures, usually if you dont live in a good microclimate or you have a heated house wall, your figs will freeze to the ground in every 3 years in my experiences. So if you wanna grow them you just have to protect them, or grow them in low cordon shape. You can see more information about this low cordon shape if you type "espalier" into the searcher.
Or you can grow them in pots, and take them to your garage in every winter...

The next thing is to find the most earliest varieties for main crop, because the summers are usually short in Germany, like here in our country, probably our summers are a bit longer than yours, so it's very important. The best varieties are Michurinska 10 (Florea in america), Ronde de Bordeaux, Saint anthony, Dalmatie and there are many others.
If you need more information bout figs just contact me, I will answer you as fast as I can.

Hello xenil,

thanks a lot, for your response. I have bought 1 gota de miel (4`) und 1 paseliere (2') this year and i have rooted 3 brunswick an 4 naples cuttings (4 weeks old) and i have ordered Babits, Brooklyn White, Olympia and Sumacki.

All from the Internet, because our gardencenters have no figs, or do not know wich kind of figs they have.

Wy plan was, buy winter hardy figs, look for the best tast and plant it in my garden when the fig is bigger.

Try this link:   http://www.houzz.com/europeZoneFinder  or an Internet search for USDA Hardiness zones in Europe.  Also check with the other German members on this forum including Feigenbaum.

Here in Seattle, the USDA Zone is irrelevant as our problem isn't Winter Hardiness but lack of heat during the growing season.  Brunswick is probably the most Winter freeze tolerant variety I grow.

Hi Kristian

See now some familiar names on your 'Growing list'.. Nice!
Are they doing OK ? Had the opportunity to taste a few ? do you think these could be rated 'cold hardy' somehow  ?
cheers

hi kiwibob,
thanks alot for your response. What else do you know about brunswick. My cuttings have good roots and a few leafs. I think i plant them in a pot in the next days. Should they go dormant, or grow under lights in winter.
No Lücke with Usda Date for my town.

Yeah I have had chance to taste Pingo De Mel, it was very delicious probably the best fig I have eaten in my whole life :). Unfortunately Soféno Preto didnt produce me, and it still has no figs on the plant. I cant say anything bout the hardiness, because I've planted them into containers.

Axel

Where did you order your Sumacki and Olympia figs? The Sumacki is the same fig from treesofjoy? I mean the green variety?

Palmapalmetto.de have a number of figs. I am trying in Norway, I expect that Germany has a better climate for figs.

Axel,

Figs are deciduous and need to be allowed to go dormant over the Winter.

Find your location on one of the Hardiness Zone maps and that will give you some guidance whether you will need to protect your trees from Winter freeze-out or if your Climate is OK to go without Winter protection.

Brunswick produces the largest, best tasting Brebas in my collection of over 30 varieties here in Seattle when they ripen properly.  Gorgi tells me that in New Jersey the Brunswick Brebas aren't fit for birds to eat, which is apparently a response to his humid climate during the growing season!  During the 15 years since I planted Brunswick in the ground, it has only ripened 4 Main Crop Figs (in 2014) due to our lack of heat during the growing season.  Most varieties in my collection don't ripen their Main Crop here in a normal year.

Hi,
@kiwibob: I've always been curious about Brunswick. Don't hesitate to open a new topic. I would be interested - especially to check how close or different it is to Goutte d'or.
My goutte d'or is close to the exit ...

@Axel : You're in Zone7 or so they say. BUT, as some already have written, Zone7 is a label for the cold in the winter and not for the heat units and amount of water and cloudy days and all those make a big difference.
If you're in a mountain zone, you may be in Zone6.

Thanks jdsfrance for the zone information. We live at 215 meters/705 feet. No montains in sight. Our summers can be hot - or not, can be dry or wet. Every year is different ;-)

Axel,

I obtained the Brunswick (which I call Vashon Violet) cutting in August 1997 and rooted it, planted it in the ground in 2001, and got my first Breba in August 2003.  It isn't a very productive tree for quantity of Brebas but their size (my largest so far was 190 grams) and flavor here in Seattle make up for the lack of quantity.
