Use your Hot Water Heater!

I have been running experiments on rooting. I put a group of cuttings, on top on my frig and then put a another group on top of my hot water heater! You will not believe how much faster, the cuttings on the hot water heater rooted!! I use the top of my hwh last year, but did not check to see how much faster it was, compared to the frig......Try this out and see for yourself!! The cuttings on the Frig, averaged about 25 days, the ones on hwh averaged around 18 days....,These cuttings were both using slightly moisten Coir in a small clear plastic box, with a snap on top.......Never even aired  them out any....Hope this helps someone!  :)

Frank, I've thought about doing this a couple times but have instead usually used a heating mat under a plastic bin.  Were your cuttings in plastic boxes or in 1 gallon bags?  Did you place anything between the surface of the hot water heater and the plastic box/bag?  I suppose the safest thing to do would be to put a temperature probe in the plastic box or bag to make sure the temp is where you want it.

Steve...My cuttings was in a plastic box and placed directly on top of the water heater. I have 2 heat mats, but I have better luck with the HWH....here  is a photo of the box I use and the cuttings I just took them off the HWH,  to show you the box and cuttings....Don't ask me why, but I never had lifted the top of the box  to air it out and  had no rot or mold. If you have any more questions please ask...:) Oh yea, hopefully one of those set of roots, belong to Black Maderia!! Don't know yet, I am going to give it a few more days! :)

Kane....Within the next week or two , I will transfer them to 1 gallon containers with a 1 Gallon ziplock bag on top, to keep in some moisture, then as they grow you can cut the corners of the bag off, to get them adjusted to not needing so much moisture (Humidity) .....then I put them in shade, so the Sun does not shine directly on them.By now, you can take the bag off... Then slowly, introduce them to semi shade, then only morning Sun,..Then slowly, slowly, introduce them to full Sun. You got to be careful about full Sun or you can burn them up, when they are not used to the Sun at all!! Right before Aug or Sept. they usually  will be ready to put in 2 gallon containers! This is the way I do it, some do it different..... Hope this helps! : )

I like the space efficiency. I definitely will try this next year. Great results!

Be careful if you have a gas heater, the vent pipe gets really hot. It will melt plastic touching it. Dont ask how i know....

Very nice Frank.  Are you losing any roots coming out of the coir?

Very nice roots, Frank. :)  I might have to try your method next year.

Yes, i agree, great job Frank.

Hey frank roots look great ,I know i am new to figs but did you use the same varieties on fridge and on HWH? For me some root a lot faster than others ,LSU improve celest in about 8 days as for Black maderia took 2 months ,i had 2 maderia cuttings 1 in moss and 1 in coir ,the 1 in coir rooted and nothing on the 1 in moss .. mine were just at room temperature ..i just went and put a couple yellow long necks on the HWH :)

I have successfully done this in the past, but this year, for some reason, everything in my laundry room is molding.  I suspect it has something to do with the humidity down there.  It does work though.

Hey Danny....No problem separating them! Was really a job, when I used Sphagnum Moss. : )

I used Sphagnum for the first time this year.  My hwh is in my cool basement (50F), but I found the cable box in my bedroom keeps a plastic shoe box a nice 76-78F.  Here are the results, I cupped them up today after just 2 weeks in sphagnum.  About half had roots like this one, the rest had lots of lenticels or root initials.  Sorry for the blurry pic.20150314_142643.jpg

Good Job Phil ! : )

~but never tried rooting in coir yet ,but i am next time ,thanks for the info i went to using a heat mat and bingo i rooted them faster than ever after reading your post ,heat is a positive for me.thanks a million you posted some very important info for us newbs.~

My water heater is outdoors.
I have found a very cheap way to replace a heat mat indoors.
I am using my cable modem under the growing tray.

I don't know if all of them modems or lan routers get hot as mine.
a TiVo cable box could also be used maybe?

I'll be doing the same thing as others mentioned here... I'll utilize my Cable Modem which actually produces quite a big deal of heat, I jsut need to make sure not to block the vents so it doesn't burn out...

This will be my first ever attempt on rooting anything. i won 2 cuttings of Col De Dame Blanc on Ebay and after much research have bought a brick of Coir, some Dip and grow which I'll use for my cuttings.

Plan on making slits with a clean razer on the Bottom ends before I dip them, place in a damp plastic shoebox of coir (damp, not wet), place on top of my warm Cable Modem that is isolated in entertainment  Center Slot.... wish me luck guys.

Edit*** I won Noire, not Blanc

Good luck and tells us your resalts.

Hi Frank, I have been doing this for the past 3 winters with great results. The heat from the water heater is really effective!!!!  I love reusing energy!!!!!!!! (See my set up below)

Ps: I love your labeling system. I am totally plagiarizing it from you!
