Using old carpet for weed barrier?

I am a vendor for the multi-family housing industry(apartments) and have access to free old carpet that is being taken out of apartments between move-ins ,the carpet is nylon construction with a woven latex backing do yall see any reason I should not cut circles out of the carpet and put them around young fig trees to get them established.I have about 150 1 year old fig trees that is going in the ground this spring and I am looking for cheap no spray ideas.

I would give them a serious wash/rinse before putting them around your trees just in case anyone used industrial strength cleaners or shampoos on the carpets during use. Inadvertent leaching of cleaner residues could have unexpected results with your plants so  washing before use is a good precaution to take...

Good point.

I think that I would buy some good landscape fabric and put that down instead.  I think the landscape fabric would probably last longer, not sure how long the carpet would last before it started to deteriorate and fall apart.

This has been discussed before. The carpet breaks down rapidly and is a royal PITA to remove later. I have started using carpet underlayment to protect figs for the winter.

I've used carpet before around tree's. I wouldn't do it again, grass will grow into it and when you try to pull it up, the carpet shreds into pieces. It really only lasted a year anyway. I'd use 5 mil plastic with a layer of stones or bark.  Just my 2-1/2 cents worth. Good luck to you. Those weeds are pesky.

That carpet's not going to make you happy. Water and dirt will erode the backing and soon weed seed will penetrate and you will have more weeds. My wife tried it years ago and we learned the hard way. What does work is the thick professional grade weed barrier. Put it down and dump some wood chips on top, not mulch.
