Variability of fruit shape and size,on same cultivar!

Here are 2 pixes of ripe fruits,on 2 Identical cultivars, one planted on North side of House in poor soil, and other planted in South side of house,in rich soil.
The difference is huge.
The ones in poor soil taste better too.
The Cultivar is Marseilles vs black.
Notice the fully closed eye (Allwayes closed) on the fruits coming from the poor soil.
The ones in the rich soil have a variable eye sometimes closed sometimes, open.

Herman2, you say poor soil, rich soil, it would be nice to know what one soil has the other does not. This would be a good comparison to see what effects the fig in growth and taste, like the eye being open on one closed on the other. You may already know this, I do not. I hope I am not misunderstood here. An example, I grow fantastic onions on my place. I changed the area I was planting and the onions were not near as good, a richer soil area. We re sampled and found I had put to much chicken litter there, we feed chickens copper sulfate. It raised the sulfur level and made the onions strong.

Rich soil has Humus and manure incorporated,is dark and soft, poor soil, has none of the above,is grey, yellow in color, and it gets hard fast, because it contain Clay as the principal ingredient.

Herman I believe you have come across a very good finding. Please bare with my logic or not. Figs have grown for thousands  of years in all good and poor soil and light conditions and still produced well with a tastier crop same variety I'm talking.
Now knowing you also grow vegetable's tomato especially have you ever noticed the same tomato variety planted in the same soil with different light exposure time taste different The one with less sun/day taste better and show less scaring , deformities, splits etc...... Just because it was not rushed.
No clue just hypothetical just an observation from last year veg crop and you hit me in the head with a hammer Myself and my wife noticed this with no explanation same tom same soil different sun time.
Like aging beef or wine or cheese etc... Just a thought

Giant:Your observation was true in your climate, because you are in Florida, and the sun is too hot there for growing Tomatoes in Full sun.
So yes ,In Florida,Tomatoes, benefit from a little shade, especially if it comes in the afternoon.
Here in New Jersey, the more sun the better, because,it is not as hot as in Florida.
Best Regards
H2

Thanks Herman, I know you are correct in the soil. Our fig orchards have always been grown in very poor rocky soil, dry hard in Italy and they always did very very well and tasted good.  My grandfather never incorporated any special soil into the earth for the fig trees, just what was there on those hills. He did incorporate other soils for other not native fruit trees that liked alot of compost ect, and with many different vegetables.  Thank you,  Ciao
Happy gardening and good health to you.

Herman you are probably right on with that observation Even though I'm originally from up North and still have family and visit I forget that even the summer temps are different we both might have 90 in the day but here the nights are still in the 80's or high 70's. I will be battling an opposite problem from most of you not getting enough chill time for my figs for them to rest Hopefully they go dormant this year.
