There is no published list. They do represent their people/places of origin, usually when I have more than one variant/strain of a variety. Some sources wish to be confidential. The value for most people comes when looking at the pictures at Figs4fun, they allow you to distinguish between the variants, and see what each looks like.
Many people have a Marseilles fig, for example. They are white ones, dark ones, and unknown ones. By calling Herman's Marseilles VS (his initials) we can now keep it clearly separated from all other "Marseilles", and know specifically what you are getting when you acquire a Marseilles VS, along with all of the info, reports, experience, pictures, etc. that go with it. Even if Marseilles VS is not really a Marseilles (not suggesting that it isn't), it still has a unique identifier, now, This helps reduce some of the confusion with many figs having the same name.
