Varietal Codes

Hello All,

does anyone have a master list of all the abbreviations that come after the varietal name?

This is probably more directed to Jon.

I heard that some of the acronyms are confidential.

There is no published list. They do represent their people/places of origin, usually when I have more than one variant/strain of a variety. Some sources wish to be confidential. The value for most people comes when looking at the pictures at Figs4fun, they allow you to distinguish between the variants, and see what each looks like.

Many people have a Marseilles fig, for example. They are white ones, dark ones, and unknown ones. By calling Herman's Marseilles VS (his initials) we can now keep it clearly separated from all other "Marseilles", and know specifically what you are getting when you acquire a Marseilles VS, along with all of the info, reports, experience, pictures, etc. that go with it. Even if Marseilles VS is not really a Marseilles (not suggesting that it isn't), it still has a unique identifier, now, This helps reduce some of the confusion with many figs having the same name.

Like many i do know a few of the abbrv.
No insults intended.

for example

UCdavis = U Can Depend A Virus Infected Scion.

GM = Great Material.

BC= Best Class

There is even a BS abbrv   ; )

All in fun

I have had the same question as Nas in the past.
Here is my humble suggestion, Jon.
Create a key on your site to these abbreviations (or within the variety description) as has been mentioned.  If it is confidential- list it as such.  Then you can stop getting hassled by us newbies about whether or not a certain abbreviation is "confidential."
You have created an incredible site here.  I think by providing as much info as possible on these sources will further seal the future of your site as the ultimate fig resource.
Ignore/Disagree with these comments if you wish- I appreciate your work regardless.

Kyle

I've had the same question also .....  What I have come to learn is that, basically, most/all of the sources are intended to be confidential.  The only ones I know about are ones that I've managed to guess based on threads here at this forum and through the occasional comment buried in this forum or the GW forum.

PS -

After sitting on this overnight, I wanted to add a few more comments.

I understand that everyone is eager to know who these sources are, but let me share a personal experience about divulging collections (/sources)....

With the details of my collection I've shared here and at GardenWeb forum, I average about 1-2 unsolicited emails per week from total strangers (not private messages - actual emails) asking me for cuttings from my trees - this started about 9 months ago, out of the blue, and I'm not sure why.  The number of strangers requesting cuttings picks up every year between December and March.  In fact, I've already gotten 6 unsolicted emails in the last two weeks from people I don't know wanting cuttings of my stuff (make that 7, I just got one while typing this).

It's pretty invasive, it's rude, and I find it really annoying to "cold-call" someone asking them for their stuff.  I don't even have that great of a collection (IMHO), so imagine the kind of crap folks would get if Jon and others posted a legend to identify their sources - even just a couple of them - those folks would get bombarded, and their collections are waaaaay better than mine.  For the actual private properties where some of these cuttings are taken, imagine the trespassers that would come, or even the occasional door-knocking those folks could/would get from strangers asking to take cuttings from their trees when someone Google-searches their location.

I understand the desire to know this information - knowledge is power - but at the same time, it is important to look at things from the other side of the fence (that of the collection owner), and fathom the harassment that those sources will be subjected to if their identity is released.  I see the potential for the frustration of NOT knowing the sources, but think about the frustration the sources would endure if their identities were revealed.

I've tried to answer a few of the emails recently and tell them to "see Encanto cuttings thread at the Figs4Fun forum on the internet" or "see UCD's Germplasm free cuttings handout", but after a few rude responses to my suggestions for these great sources, I gave up.  People can be real assholes sometimes when you point them in the right direction rather than give them specifically what they want with no effort on their part - some folks expect you to send one piece of every tree in your entire collection ... for free, at that ... just because "you have so much").

The reality is, I want to help everyone, it's in my DNA to help others, but at this point, I just ignore the emails because some people have been so douchey about it all, some folks don't even bother to thank you when you give them good pointers on where to find limitless supplies of cuttings.

I'm proud to say that many folks can vouch to the fact that I don't mind sharing with folks who contribute to this community and others ... even the new people who come in to ask questions.  How could I?  Just by asking questions and participating, you are sharing the love I have for figs, and educating others who come in the future, or those who signed up just to read and see what other folks are doing.  I've shared and traded with many people here with no expectation of anything in return, and I wish all of us would do the same; I think if we did, there would be no need to divulge sources, there is more power in having many individuals with small collections sharing with each other than everyone going to a single source.
