I am reaching out to the pros in this forum...and it's a bit off topic I know.  Can anyone tell me if you can root persimmon or mulberry tree cuttings?

If yes, can you please tell me how it's done?

here's a link we recently had some discussions about the persimmon and rooting etc...
I rooted Mulberry Pakistan and Shahrizad or something that sounds  alike  (the huge white one) out of 9 cuttings I managed to get only 1 Pakistan and 2 Shahrizad mulberries . I have some cuttings of A very delicious mulberry variety it's white with touch of light purple on sunny side size 1-5 inches of berries. I just dipped both cut ends in paraffin and zip-locked them for now.

Hello Raffaele I'm not an expert but I did put some mulberry cuttings in putting soil last spring no problem 8 out of 10 rooted

Don't know about cuttings but I took some very large air layers - from 3' to 5' long and around 1" caliper - from my Pakistan mulberry this summer. All survived except the one I killed with too much water. I also tried rooting some directly in the ground, but I proved that does not work because my wife will see sticks poking out of the ground and throw them away.

I have rooted several mulberries, white and red, and had a very high success rate, even my first cuttings rooted better than my fig cuttings.

Hello. I have been trying to root persimmon with no luck at all i was told it has to be grafted from another type fruit tree root stock. I never did this procedure before. It involves cutting main branch off of the rooted tree and grafting persimmon scion lining up the skin underneath the bark on both pieces. Going to try it.

I have tried to root persimmons and mulberries using rooting hormone (Clonex) without success.  They initially started growing but didn't produce roots.   Others have told me persimmons are very difficult to root and so they use grafting on seedling rootstock.

Green mulberry cutting's apparently can be rooted using rooting hormone with proper mist system.

Mario, how did you get your mulberry's to root?

Pino. What is seedling root stock.? I talked to bass about my persimmon not rooting. I also used clonex with leaves and no roots. He told me to used seedling root stock. Can you tell me actactly what is seedling root stock? Thank you richie

I was referring to using persimmon seedlings as the rootstock and grafting the persimmon variety of choice onto it. 
I purchased some persimmon seedling trees last year and will try grafting this year if I can get some persimmon scion again.

Pino , I just put them in half gallon black pots in my green house march/ April and watered as they needed, they are about 3/4 feet tall now planted in garden pot and all. Will plant them direct in the ground at my grand kids houses this spring

Pino i have plenty of scion persimmon. Its my next door neighbor. She dont even care about the tree lol. Not sure which one it is. I make wine with them. When ripe they are very soft very sweet. Most sweetist fruit i have ever seen. Really soft and gooey

Along with my grape wine I also make peach wine its my wife's favourite wine.  What is persimmon wine like?
Also what color and size are the persimmons do you happen to have a photo?
If there are some suckers growing from the roots (or some seedlings) she may not mind you taking them  and grafting your favourite variety on them.

Hi Pino they where 8/12 inches long about half inch, no hormones and I used miracle grow potting mix, not sure which one I am new at this I just got lucky I guess. The mother tree is in a parking lot that used to be a nursery years back, they are very sweet large white whit a tint, the best I ever had. If you like some cuttings I could sent the to you just let me know your address

I have rooted various Mulberry.  I treat my Mulberry cuttings the same as figs, cups of perilite in humidity bin with bottom heat, and low strength feritgation.  

Persian has had the lowest success rate, followed by Pakistani.  Best success has been with Morus alba such as Shangri la, and various proven unknowns.  Guessing off the cuff, 30% with Persian and  40% Pakistani success rate, and 60-70% with others.

Success to me is fully rooted and continuing to leaf out, and up-potted to gallon container.

I should have added that air layering the Mulberries had a higher success rate compared to cuttings.

Pino there alot of suckers that grow from the base of tree. They are growing from the bottom of the truck. Do i just take part of the root from the trunk? This persimmon has a peach colored pulp. Fruit is really soft when ripe. Thick thick slimmy pulp drips out. Just squeeze and everything comes out. Best wine we make. Apple peach flavor. Very silky mouth feel. No pics. Allready dormit. Have wine i will show pic of color. So the big root of the tree has 3 foot tall saplings growing out of it. How do you remove?

If you guys can root mulberries then there is hope for me too...LOL  Maybe it was the variety I tried.

That persimmon sounds very nice.  Did you notice if the tree is grafted?
When I take suckers I try and get as many roots as I can by cutting the branch as deep as possible.   Even just a few roots can work well just have to be a  little more careful with it.

Pino. How can i tell if tree been grafted. Its been there for 25 plus years i was told. Its about 15 plus feet tall. I will split the root that the sucker it attached too thanks. Richie

Sometimes it is a little difficult to tell but if you look at the main trunk usually from 1-4' from the ground.  If grafted there will be a change in the bark pattern or a bulge around the trunk and then a different bark pattern or similar that indicates the graft point.

The point is if the tree wasn't grafted then it is a unique variety and the suckers when grown will have the same fruit as the mother tree. 
If it has been grafted then the suckers are a wild (seedling) persimmon and after transplanting you will need to graft them with the branches (scion) that is producing the nice fruit. 

Doubt if its,a,graft. The man thats lives there planted pare tree fig tree banana and persimmon all at the same time all are huge

I have a good sized mulberry tree but it grows really small fruit,the cutting I got is for white fruit the size of your thumbnail so maybe I will wait and try grafting

Forget about trying persimmon.

Mulberry vary depending mostly on the species.  Morus alba roots extremely easily for me while Morus nigra has been very difficult for me, so I graft M. nigra on M. alba.  If you're not sure what you have, the leaf buds on nigra are quite a bit darker than alba.  There are other species also and I have never tried those so I can't say about the others.
