Vasilika Melissi , a funny variety

Yes, it look nice inside but... it splits badly and you want it to be way overripe to see this color. Most likely you will have bugs in your mouth too while eating the fig.
The taste was just OK. My Strawberry Verte is much tastier and problem free compared to this one.
The fig was pollinated, the seeds sink.

This is just my experience growing it for the first year.

Anybody else grow it to share your experience?

It looks absolutely awesome.  I guess you can't judge a fig by its appearance.  Glad I got to see it though!

Looks nice!
Wonder why it split.  Did you get a lot of rain or very high humidity during the ripening period?

I have had about 10 figs so far. Super dry summer, all split, the tree is in the ground.
I wish we had some rain regularly but this is California.

I agree with you, we can't judge a fig by a picture as most of the Greek figs I see looks photoshopped or saturation adjusted. It's good to know that we have a lot of nice varities like verte, ischia green, scrette etc. Cheers

Looks great Igor and just as I can remember it growing up. It is one of the main commercial varieties in Greece and you don't pick them until they start to split! Andreas has mentioned that also at a previous posting. Your fig might be over pollinated and that is something you can run a search on and read about. When over pollinated figs kinda blow up as the thin skin cannot withstand the pressure of the expanding seeds , and it's almost the same effect you get when overwatering during the last month before rippening( for different reasons of course)! Is the flesh a dark reddish color? I'm talking about the layer between the skin and the interior.
Thanks for sharing, great to see someone report on this awesome fig.

Igor
very nice picture even if the fig was not that good for you.
i cant compare it to mine... i dont have one.

Vinny (kkk2210)
most of the greek figs you have seen in here are probably mine.
sorry they dont live up to your standards but that is all i can do with a cheap $30 phone camera from ebay.

The time of year has alot to do with flavor in most figs even if its warm. Towards the end of season and young trees effects many varieties

I was asked to post more pics.
Here they are, the leaves. Ripe and not ripe yet. Potted and in the ground leaves.

Mine has grown very well, 5'+, but no fruit yet.  I fully expect it to produce great figs this year.  It seems you are being very premature in your judgement of this variety.  Is yours still in a pot?  Can you find room to plant it in the ground?

Vinny, I use photoshop extensively but mostly to crop and add watermarks.  I use Lightroom to adjust contrast, color balance, saturation, and sharpen to levels that I think are similar to what I've seen.  I've never seen any evidence that Andreas has used Photoshop at all.

Harvey,

I ripe fruit I posted the photo of at the top of this thread is from a tree in the ground.
I took the pics of the potted plant as well because it was easier to show the leaves that way.
The ground tree is growing very well and very fast.

Okay.  Maybe the splitting you've experienced is due to excess pollen as someone else pointed out.  I found Vista did that for me in 2014.  Too much of a good thing, LOL

Harvey,
As you can see, it splits. And it is ready for a consumption when it is split.
Some would say it is fine and others would have an issue with this because of the bugs inside.
You have to pick the ripe figs off right away because of this particular feature .

Pen,
Thanks for the photos!

Pen, are your figs in Bulgaria caprified?

IMHO,this cultivar will not do well in rainy cool climates.

This is a very late variety and needs long hot summer. Rainy cool climates will not do. The figs trees are not caprified although the wasp lives freely in the aria.
My farm is far away from any male caprifigs and maybe only very few (if any) wasps come around here.

Thanks for explanation!

Awesome pics Igor , thanks for posting an update.

Pen ,I'm speachless . Beautiful figs and amazing photos. You're making me jealous. Thanks for sharing!

Anyone selling cuttings from the Vasilika Melissi ?
