Vasilika sika fig not the same with vasilika milissi my friend

I am hoping for my first Vasilida Sika this year.  thanks for showing yours and it does look good

they are both excellent varieties :)

@budihartono71, The 1st picture looks very inviting, thanks for sharing.

Vasilika Sika means Royal Figs
Vasilika Melissa means Royal HoneyBee

Looks very nice Budi. Vasilika Melissi is totally different variety. Hope you receive your cuttings soon.

thanks Kausik & Aaron4USA

hi i am andreas from greece.
sorry for budding in but
you are both right and wrong.
Vasilika = Royal       Sika = Figs
Vasilika Melissa means Royal HoneyBee ... Melissa = HoneyBee
BUT MELISSI like it says on the photo is a color for the outside of the fig, and it means honey like color on the outside.

now i am sorry to say but the fig in the photo is not vasilika syka...
it has the wrong leaf and the inside of the fig is not dark red enough.

there are 3 types of vasilika figs (sika or syka is just the word for fig in greek)
vasilika mavra (black)
vasilika aspra (white)
and vasilika melissi (the skin is the color of honey)

Yeah, the USA Marva Sika is very good tasting. Hope some day DNA would  help to sort out the
variety.

Hello Enigma !

Welcome to the forum.
Thank you very much for your input.

As I understand you live in Australia and in this regard may be you could bring up some light on a local 'Mavra Sika' fig known by 'Spanish Dessert' and apparently quite common over there.
Could you tell a bit more of such cultivar ?
I am told that this could be an old Greek variety.

Andreas, thanks for the clarification...

Just like people here talk about Foco Preto... means Black Fig...

Old generation immigrants used to call their figs by the color... Mavra, Aspra...Branco, Preto...etc...they never cared about science behind it. they wanted to have what there was in their country backyard, so they chose one black, one white/green variety cuttings and brought with them to US.
Just like my few friends here in LA, they have the most delicious figs ever , yet, all they call them by is COLOR... Spanish, Italians, Greeks and Armenians... they call them Blacks and Whites.

I, for one, never thought Melissi meant color of honey, I would say..Xroma Melis perhaps...(meaning color of honey) and I just verified with my sister she said Yes, Melissi means color of honey. Go figure.

Thank you Enigma for all the information.
This has been for me (I am very curious) a mystery if you like.
We read various pieces of information with generic descriptions of that cultivar  but fail to see pictures of the real fruit ! On some written material there are pictures not clearly associating images to text and the same pictures are found all over the Internet to show nice 'black figs'.

I decided to try and find out how could I buy some scions to root and/or graft them here and with some luck arrive at the real stuff,,, will keep pushing

As for the W/cup thank you  and hope Fernando may save the honors !

Francisco

This is my Vasilika Melissi:
