awesome

Why can't we have zone 7b or 8 like you two ?

The breba looks too good from Zone5a. I hope you enjoy it (before the critters).

That looks delicious, thank you for sharing. The soil in the background looks pretty dry so I bet that fig is pretty sweet already. How much more will it darken up or time till full ripeness do you think? Forgive my ignorance.

striveforfreedom,

the ground on the background is my lawn. i keep all my figs in containers. i keep weeds short. forgot to overseed last winter. and new lawn service i got is killing all my weeds, so now my lawn looks bare.

noss,

the figs was rooted by gene h. in spring of 2010. it started putting out fig last year. so it started putting on fig about 1.5 yrs after it was rooted. my VdB doesn't grow fast. it's sort of short tree. i pruned it a lot on top of that to get cuttings for the cub scouts. it's 2nd year since rooted and it's putting on figs earlier than last year. VdB tastes awesome, but i only tasted VdB and Paradiso Gene. both awesome to my taste. i'll wait and see what others taste like if my cuttings from this year survive to be trees.

edit: i heard it takes around 80-85 days for the figs to ripen. i noticed that bigger breba back in early march.. so i would put that on end of may/mid june before i can taste them. the main crop since they are starting now.. i would think it will be ready by end of june/mid july. that's whole month earlier this year compare to last year on VdB. Paradiso Gene which also gave me figs last year didn't ripen until late nov. even if Paradiso is early, i don't expect to see any fig starting until sometime in august or sept.

My VdB looks very similar to yours!  The 3 year old has ripening large Brebas and a ton of main crop figs breaking out all over the place.  Her daughter had no Brebas, but there are many figs.  My tree is getting pretty big.  Probably because it snaked it's roots into the ground through the pot drain holes.  When it goes dormant, it will be both top and root pruned and put into either some ground away from any buildings, or into a much larger pot.

VdB is going crazy. i guess it's the weather. now i have multiple breba and main crop going at the sametime. it looks like it's going to be a great year for the VdB.

Nice looking fig, both fruit and plant. Looks huge. Enjoy!

noss,

the leave don't really look like that. the first picture shows leaves that started while the tree was in garage and the are all twisted and misshaped. the second picture show the leave on new branch that's coming out. they are not fully shaped leaves when the tree puts out the later leaves.

my tree is from gene h. and i was told this is from paradise nursery. the figs are very dark outside and very red inside. it taste very strong raspberry. if i let it ripe on the tree completely until it's slightly winkled, it's almost too sweet to eat.

i gave all the cuttings to boys in my den this year. i have two back up growing for my younger son who didn't try any figs last year, but he says he will eat off his trees.

just love this tree. it doesn't give me any problem. put out fig early, and great taste.
