Cecil, could it be soot caused by honeydew from a surrounding tree? I know aphids and white flies cause this. Does it wipe off with damp rag? Also check under the leaves for white flies. I'm just guessing of course since you didn't post a picture.

Tim,

I just checked it with a damp cloth, it will not come off, out of all the plants I have near it, it is the only one showing blk. leafs, it has 4 of those on it and the rest(about 30 look good?
I might add the underside of the blk. leaves look OK

Thanks

Cecil is it black like sunburn spots or are the leaves turning all black?

Leaves turning Black

Cecil if you said its been raining that long and the plant is in the rain that could be the problem, too much water can cause that. Also the wrong fertilizer will cause the plant to turn black and die I learned that the hardway.

The plants have been protected from the rain, I have not fertilized since the last week of August!

Im not sure what to tell you Cecil, Hopefully one of the experts will chime in and help you out. Wish you and your plant the best of luck

Cecil, can you take a pic and put on,  sometimes it may not be in the rain, but Heat combined with alot of humidity from rainy weather could cause. Put pic on Ciao.

Maggie I posted a picture!

sorry Cecil,  I'm having a dizzy day!! duh? My leaves look like that but they are going to sleep for winter.  They also look frost bite, but I doubt you had frost.  Must be something specific to this variety and the environment its in? how is the top leaves?

All the other leafs are beautiful!

I never had a VdB before, maybe it is like you said a trait of VdB

Thanks Kiddo

Cecil after seeing your pictures i see what you mean.
Its ok , some of my plants had same leaves just before i brought them all in garage . Each year some leaves do this on my plants some years worse some better before i put them away im thinking its weather realted.
Course my leaves are dropping off in garage, you can take those leaves off it wont hurt the plant.
I will post some pictures of example when i have some more time.

Hmmmmm,

OK Martin, I might take the black leafs off tomorrow

I have never noticed that before, coarse this time last year, I didn't have this Plant.

Speaking of plants, My Hardy Chicago is still growing great guns!

Thanks for that and the Sal's EL (it ain't doing nothing) but it is not turning leafs black neither!

Actually looks like sunburn/heat stress. Has this plant been recently been moved out into the sun from indoors/shade/greenhouse? May have had a brief period of underwatering - maybe just a couple hours "late" with watering and the stress is shown this way.

I wouldn't remove the leaves, any green portion is still contributing. If it is still putting out new leaves and/or growing tip and newest leaves are fine, I wouldn't worry.

Jon,

No, It has been in the same environment for a good while, it has not put on any new growth/leaves in about a month!
I will leave it be!
Now that you mention "water stressed" I did run it dry about 10 days ago.My Bad AGAIN

Many thanks
