VDB/Black Madeira question to those who have both

Well here goes my first post..
I already have a VDB and I am thinking about getting a Black Madeira. My question is are the two similar in taste? Is it worth having both? I can only get one or two more trees. I have already looked everywhere online for a comparison from someone who has both to no avail. I live in Houston and it can get quite hot and humid. The types I have so far are LSU Purple, VDB, Celeste. I'm just looking for something different with good quality. I didn't like my Tx Blue giant that I left behind at my old place. TX EB was good when it was dry but that's not very often here. I'm going back for a cutting of my IC at the old place so that leaves me with room for one maybe two more. Any suggestions anyone? Thanks in advance..

Welcome to the forum ... get the Blk Madeira. I am not sure whether you are aware that JH Adriatic does well in Texas
especially in Austin where it was discovered. It seems JH Adriatic does well with both crops in Austin.

If you get Black Madeira, go with the "strain" that came from username: "KK", which originally came from Jon at Encanto Farms. Apparently, this strain is less afflicted with the Fig Mosaic Virus (FMV), which negatively affects the growth rate of the tree. There's another strain from USDA/UC Davis, that is so ill with FMV that its unacceptably slow growth rate makes it unreasonable for a non-collector to keep around.

Consider a fig called "Figo Preto", which is believed to be the same cultivar as B.Madeira, except it's healthier and thus is more productive. Also, it's been reported to produce fruit slightly earlier in the season.

Black Madeira/Preto has more complex flavors than VdB.  One of the best tasting figs out there.

Thanks for the heads up on Preto. I'll add that to my wish list.

Black Madeira / Preto have a berry flavor like VdB, but it is kinda like the difference between straberry jam and strawberry cake. They both taste like berry, but BM has a sweetness to it that is just amazing.

Thanks! That was the answer I was looking for.. Ive been leaning towards BM for the last week. Just need to find a good strain like Levar said.

So just remember that BM is a difficult variety to root. If you have experience rooting, go for it! If not, you may want to spend the extra $ on an already rooted cutting.

I ended up getting KK's Black Madeira on eBay... I'm looking forward to trying it.

Good luck with it.
BM (UCD) is a very slow grower. I have one in the ground and In its third leave is still about one foot tall. Still not sure when it will really take off.

Everyone is saying black madeira because it in a class of its own but if all you have is room for one more tree I would go with something different because I live in the south and the humidity does a number on my BM, the few I ate were awesome but 80% of them bust wide open and can't be eaten even if we haven't had rain in a month. I hate to negative but if all you have room for is one more tree get one that will good for the area.

Sorry, I didn't notice till after my last post that you already got  the BM, good luck with it.
