Verdal Longue Info

I recently seen some posts on this variety and it seems that Jon & Bass find it to be a good fig for taste (and good productivity for Jon also) I have done a search and only found  6 posts which I'm referring to and one member said he trashed his after observing for a few seasons Maybe not right for his climate

I got some nice cuttings this year from Jon and placed in Spag Moss a first for me as I usually go right to a rooting mix no baggie just a cup stick and grow with some type of dome. OK one stick is starting to show roots and I'm sure the others will soon follow. hopefully they will take the next  step well
Can I skip cup and go right to pot with a light potting mix 70/30 perlite and potting soil same as I would use for cup with a dome lid?
Also is this just a main crop fig?
FMV signs?
Splitting and Eye characteristics?
Any feedback good or bad always appreciated

Hi Sal
most would not do that. Iv'e done it in a 4 inch pots and recently in a  2 - 6 inch ones only though nothing bigger.
I have and learned from a few mistakes doing it like this rotting the stick and drowning the roots from to much water, i now use a spray mister if i do it like you mentioned.
What i do is get the soil im going to use and spread it out and mist it then i spoon soil in pot only and make the hole and put stick in it but not to deep because if it needs water before the stick takes hold i use the mister so as not to try and wet the pots soil completely and it can dampen the roots slightly without drowing them from being to wet.

Main crop, breba unknown.

If you pot is out of proportion to your plant size (and amount of roots) you increase the likelihood of overwatering. When first rooting you need a lot less water than you think.

Thanks Martin and Jon I will follow the advice and cup up first and not rush them along.

Yes you can more buried better chance for it. I like to leave at least one node showing a bud  . If you dont eventually it will grow through soil i just like to see part of plant on top doing its thing.

I'm going to leave it in the SM for a few more days so maybe a few more roots develop and then i will plant deep in cup or water bottle i need to stop checking every day it's just hard to stay away lol

Sal

I understand the checking every day part.
Most members do the same including me especially when i move them under lights i may check twice a day to make sure there happy.

I was going to put 3-5 x a day closer to the truth but didn't want to reveal my insanity. ; )

Sal,
how many times  when the figs plants are outdoors during the season Sal ?    ; )
For me i gaze at them each time i let the dogs out.  ; )
But i have good excuse,
There on the patio when i let the dogs out i can;t miss em, and sheepishly saying
i still walk over to them and look,      Jay Leno Part (raising of voice) slightly raising voice like Jay Leno does sometimes during his monalog     "Did they change in the last few hours."
NOPE "!   ; )

But i like to add Sal when i do get my coffee and pipe or cig and go out there in morning during the height of season it always seems from overnight thats when my figs are noticed to have swelled some.
I suppose i go overboard a little since retirement about these plants but its fun. and keeps me outta trouble.  ; )

I think, if we all would admit to it, all us fignuts are a little obsessive with our fig plants, huh? Sal, you are not alone, my friend.

Sal and Martin,

A savvy member on the other forum opined as to the importance of pruning an pitching in conjunction with this type of behavior:

"Most importantly, it gives the gardener something to do while he or she is out staring at the fig trees, so the neighbors dont think he or she needs to be institutionalized - important in this era of rising health care costs. (This is also a rationale for pruning tomato plants, but that is a different forum).  "

C.J.

Well I'm glad to hear I'm not alone in my obsession. Now if I could just convince my wife that this is perfectly normal behavior she would stop harping on me to seek professional help. lol
