Very disappointing year

  • PHD

Maybe my expectations were to high but this season was not good here in North Jersey. It started out very cool and is ending that way also, add to that a ton of rain and bad rust. I know my trees are young but even figs I have tasted from friends that are 20-30 year old trees have not tasted as good as previous years. A lot of work was done potting trees and wrapping in ground trees for very little results ....  Hopefully next year will be better and the hard work will start paying off

  Pete

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger up there. I think the entire East Coast has had a lousy year in regards to crop yields due to rain. :(

My in ground trees did well, but all the potted ones were a disappointment, as far as 1st year growth goes.  I believe it was my potting mix, so we'll see what a more nutritious mix does for next year.

pete, i think the best way to avoid rain problems is using 5-1-1.  this stuff drains super fast and will only hold so much water.

of course, that also means watering more frequently.

This was a great year for the in ground figs here in my area... trees that haven't  produced in years for other fig growers had plenty of figs. I visited many Greeks, Italians, and MiddleEasterns and their trees were always loaded. It was a mild winter and we had a hot period earlier in the season, but now it is getting too cold.

My brown turkey are just now becoming ripe. The plant is only two years old but the figs are pretty flavorful. My Celeste was a little disappointing. And I don't know if any of the 3-4 dozen figs on my 1 year preto will ripen. It's been a little frustrating here in DE too. Continue to fight the good fight.

Was a mixed yr. Mostly my fault. But there were few shining moments. Looking forward to next yr.

I feel fortunate that in Vancouver Canada, this has been a very good year. We had a long, dry, and sunny summer. There was not a single drop of rain in July, which by itself was a record. My in ground desert king got ripened more than 1 month earlier than last year. It produced more than 300 figs. For the first time, my family felt we had enough figs.

Pete, I thought you were describing my situation and my summer of this year. It has been a cooler, rainy kind of short summer
In zone 5a here, the spring was cold all the way until early summer. That delayed embryo formation by at least two Weeks. Then there a couple of very hot weeks reaching up to 95~96F (high like this is uncommon here) and could not reach to water all pots on time and some got stressed due to lack of watering. Then again cold rainy days in August. So, there was less fruit on trees, on fewer tress and late.
Now we have nights plunging down to 30~35F at night. I do get some ripe figs on some plants but there is two to three weeks delay compared to the past years. There is concern of frost any time from now on . But I don't think it will discourage me.
I got decent breba crop from some trees though delayed by a couple of weeks.

It's not looking good for me either everything grew well once it got going , but I have so many figs on the trees that probably won't ripen with how cold it's getting. It really sucks I have a bunch of unknowns I was hoping to see and now it looks like I have to wait another year.

weather this yr was just very strange for where i am. hope it's not a start to things to come. that will really blow. few that i got to try out this yr has been great. but now trees are doing something even funnier. weather isn't too hot, but the container is getting drier faster. must be the light wind that's blowing all the time. not sure if my Black Madeira will ripen this yr. but Figo Preto turned color yesterday.

Very bad year here too, same problems too much rain, too much water in the stagnant air,too much cold after August 25,and rust problem more than any other year.
I should mention,that 2011 1n2 2012 were very bad too.
I should also mention what some weather guru said about the climate.
We get this cold August Sept, and Oct,because of the melting Ice cups.
The extreme heat in JUly,melts the Ice cups at the poles, which in turn cool the ocean waters, later in August and Sept, which creates, cool winds and cold rains, coming down on the rest of the globe.
This is only temporary till the ice cup disappear, and after that only God knows how the climate will turn.
Yet it is happening,for sure.
