Violette de Bordeaux. This one needed a few more days and to be picked, however, I expected to harvest several more figs but only one remained. I suspect it was the squirrels because the birds are not as skilled and greedy to remove four clam shells from one tree. It may be time for a few Conibear 110s. VdB is VdB. You know it when you taste it.



   

I won one from Pete when I first joined this forum. I wil be able to sample its first in a couple of days. I knocked most of the figlets, so that the tree grows. I also have a different one from Dave (AZ), and it is loaded with brebas, however these second ones are pointier. The one from Pete has the round shape of yours. I am excited about these new fruits.

Just bought VdB from an eBay seller and it is scheduled to be delivered today and if all goes well, I may be able it enjoy some figs next season. Thanks for sharing.

VDB arguably the best all around fig for pot culture, taste, easy to grow and very reliable. Wouldn't be without one

The squirrels are not sharing. They are taking whatever they can get. I get it but damn.
A Conibear 110 will do and I have resisted the temptation. I checked them out last week. Rusted but I can still set it with hand strength. Thank God for my wife and daughter. Otherwise, if legal and we could limit the damage, fire flamed arrows would be flying up into trees.

I'm with you on 100% on squirrel-cide, Jimmie despite my tag line of Peace, Love and Understanding. My only issue with these traps are my two cats wandering around the property.

Always great photos and reviews. I plan to visit sometime.

You say step over. Ok. I will add different microclimate plus the fact that my trees are likely more stressed than yours. Mine are potted, fertilized less frequently, and they are fruiting for genetic survival :) I have a grounded step over Smith and it has produced exactly 1 ripe fig. It is the 'mother' Smith tree from JF&E. Each offspring that I have and the one that Frank has produced more ripe figs this season. All of the above.

JD, what about a nice .177 pellet gun? Could make for some fun afternoons of tree-rat popping. I can just see their reaction as one slips up on your lovely fig tree and receives a 'kiss' in the butt! That would make a fig lovers heart sing. Post a few heads on sticks and the rest might get the message.

Violette De Bordeaux EL is another cultivar that's been ripening flavorful figs in this years cold summer and early fall. They still have their jammy sweet berry flavored interior and the other complex and skin flavors with seed crunch. The tree is still ripening good tasting figs even with 30*F - 40*F at nights.
